| Descripción |
This study presents, contextualizes and analyses the Solitude Trilogy, a series of radio documentaries produced by the Canadian musician, pianist and composer Glenn Gould (1932-1982). All the three documentaries ? The Idea of North (1967), The Latecomers (1969) and The Quiet in the Land (1969) ? were broadcast by CBC radio and represent, as a reflection of the radiophonic language, an intersection between the massive media and sonic art, seeing that the edition principles of his programs was the perception, by Gould, that radio may be thought as music, postulating the Gould?s ?contrapuntal radio?, notedly influenced by the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach?s (1685-1750) fugues polyphonic compositions. Gould?s experimental radiophonic language is paralleled with many principles that lead the radio journalistic production nowadays, crystallized in the daily practice of broadcasters and in journalism guides. Concepts developed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari of ?order-words? and ?being? worked as basis for a radiophonic language criticism; the first, describing the language and the media language, particularly, as an emission of commands to the interlocutor; the second, as a description of a convergence point of two historically separated areas, sonic art and broadcasting journalism. This study passed through Gould?s biographical aspects that help to make explicit his relation with the mass communications media; a historical description of radio and its absorption by productive systems and the consequential normalization and standardization of its language, and, at last, the listening of Gould?s documentaries as a frontier, border, gender between music and radio |
