Anthracnose (Colletotrichum sublineolum Henn. in Kab. amp; Bubák) is disseminated throughout sorghum growing fields in the country, where epidemics occur. The objective of this work was to characterize the diversity of populations of C. sublineolum in areas where severe epidemics occur, to identify combinations between sorghum lines able to generate highly resistant sorghum hybrids and, to evaluate the resistance of hybrids generated by such combinations in different places of Brazil. The population diversity and the distribution of C. sublineolum in six places were analyzed by three indexes of phenotypic diversity and one index of complexity. The higher diversity was verified in Jardinópolis (SP) and higher complexity in Sete Lagoas (MG) and Goiânia (GO). Races of the pathogen were well distributed in such populations and the complex were more prevalent as compared to the simpler ones. To identify combinations with capacity to generate hybrids with high resistance, four restorer (R) lines and five male-sterile (A) lines were inoculated with the same isolates of C. sublineolum utilized for the population diversity study. Coefficients of pathogenicity associations (PAC) and virulence associations (VAC) were used to verify the occurrence of virulence dissociation or association to those combinations, in all six locations. It was verified the occurrence of association of virulence for the combinations between the R and A lines, tested in this work, indicating that such combinations are not potentially useful for the generation of hybrids with durable resistance. Assays with experimental hybrids were carried out in four locations to identify those with resistance in the evaluated locations. The reaction of hybrids in the field were compatible with what was predicted based on the analysis of the virulence structure of the pathogen population. The resistance expressed by the majority of genotypes in the field could be considered to be of horizontal or incomplete vertical type. |
