The world?s crescent demand for healthier food has given prominence to organic coffee plantations, in which the use of agrotoxics is prohibited and the use of organic matter, the search for a balance between soil and plant through a rational management of the soil and the valorization of rural workers are searched. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of organic management on the physical attributes of a Red Oxisol cultivated with coffee plant Lavras country, MG, Brazil. The experiment was delineated in a 4 x 4 balanced lattice and the 16 treatments were arranged in a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial outline with 4 additional treatments and 5 replications. An adjacent conventionally managed coffee plantation was used as the control. Sampling for the evaluation of soil physical attributes and total organic carbon was performed in August 2005. Disturbed and undisturbed samples were collected in the projection of the coffee plants at depth 0-20 cm. The results indicated that the organic management reduced the water-dispersible-clay and bulk density values and increased the flocculation index, total porosity and macroporosity when compared to the control. There were no significant changes in the stability of aggregates. Few organic management treatments presented increments in hydraulic conductivity values in comparison to the control. The effects of the application of organic manure, green manure and coffee plant residues indicated changes for some physical attributes according to the decomposition rate and C:N ratio of these materials. The organic management treatments did not proportionate an expressive increase in the organic carbon content in comparison with the conventional management in a period of one year; however it changed soil physical attributes. Among the sources of organic matter used, the green manuring in the interrows of the coffee crop participates more efficiently in the alterations of the soil physical attributes.
