The present dissertation has how central investigation and analysis theme the religiosity in the literature; this theme is development from the analysis about the novels The Fruit of Thy Womb (1976) and The Opinions of the Time (1984), written by Herberto Sales. In the first book, are localizes several Christian Religion elements. These elements were take away of the hope text, the Bible, and put in the fiction. From this practice, is possible to observe what manner the writer use and reread them in his fiction, and which the implications of that use above the signification and critique. In the second book, is made the analysis about the ironic denunciation made by writer about the legitimated performance of Roman Catholic Church, during the Brazil colonization, on the black slavery and on the land and cultural dispossessing of the Indian. This searching was development under the pos-modernity perspective, period in that the questions about faith and transcendent come back to manifest importance, according attest the proper literature well represented by these two book of Herberto Sales. In the first moment, was discussed the intellectual function in the contemporary society, from the double performance by Herberto Sales, writer native from Bahia. His performance happened in the literature, by the publication of many fiction books distinguished by a denunciation and social critique, and in a administrative job, during the Brazilian military despotism. This period was marked by violence and repression. This double performance established a paradox face to his intellectual function, because it made befall above him a inconvenient suspect of cooptation, and this can have prejudiced the credibility of his discourse.
