This case study throws a reflection on the losses in steam system leakage, focusing on the case of PETROBRAS/RLAM (Mataripe?s Landulpho Alves Refinery). In so far as theproblem defies the refinery work teams, the assessment of perceptions on the issue and the consequent increase in understanding the question as well as searching for better results is of great relevance. Concepts are sought within a context of crisis in modern science paradigm as well as found in the emergence of a new paradigm which brings conceptual complexity for the construction of a new way of viewing beyond the apparent. Concepts are also used in order to allow for the possibility of exploring the understanding and the attitude of those involved with traced steam system leakage. Considering the author?s experience with the problem, erceptions are established in order to be validated by those who deal directly with the problem, who may provide additional perceptions on the issue. The position of managers indirectly involved with the problem was also included. The analysis of the features of the complexity concept points to the identification of aspects which reinforce the need for other approaches to deal with the problem, emphasizing team work and the application of the notion of thematic fragmentation, as opposed to the disciplinary fragmentation, dominant in modern science paradigm based studies. The four theses which define the emergent paradigm are being used for analyzing the more representative perceptions to deal with the difficulties inquestion.
