The Special Interest Group for Area Studies Resource Sharing was formed in 2004 under the auspices of the Japan Consortium for Area Studies. In November 2006, the group conducted its 2nd overseas survey by visiting a number of organizations in the United States that support academic library networks such as OCLC and CRL. There are a variety of non-profit academic library networks in the United States such as OCLC,CRL,ARL,etc. each playing a different and important role. The organizations are developed through partnerships, libraries cannot join automatically. The authors believe that it might be beneficial for Japanese organizations to develop similar organizations based on partnerships in order to improve resource sharing.
