This research examines the development of specialized human resources in public libraries,particularly librarians, and analyses their need for permanent education. In order to evaluate these professionals' profile, Information Science Institute professors of the Federal University of Bahia were interviewed. The research aims to contribute to raise the level of knowledge about information professionals' profile, considering their educational role in the transference of information in the callenging modern society. The contribution of the Federal University of Bahia and that of the unions in the period of 1959-2001 is highlighted. It is a case study concerning nine official units of public libraries in the city of Salvador-Bahia, incluiding the general directing office of the State Public Libraries System and a non-governmental istitution. The research results show that there is a need for permanent education in the area of Information Science, especially in relation to the use of information and communication technologies leading to new procedures of information dissemination. The needs and demands found point to the convenience of using the implementation of a permanent education program as a strategy, including the eventual use of distant education. The information Science Institute of the Federal University of Bahia may coordinate this program, in partnership with public and non-governmental organizations. It intends to assure the development of the public library information professionals, enabling them to face modern society challenges and to benefit from the possibles perspectives it can bring.
