Technical qualification of maintenance employees working for chemical and petrochemical industries is one of the major concerns of that sector. A rapid progress of technology for industry equipment and an increased complexity of the activities and risks involved in the tasks have been requiring employees to bear additional competencies and technical skills as well. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a professional qualification program on the onstruction of competencies required for safe behavior among employees working in industry maintenance. The methodology applied was exploratory, including procedures for case study, in addition to qualitative and quantitative approaches. Procedures developed demonstrated that the context where the program was carried out was important to explain the results achieved. In such context the technical courses delivered during the program resulted in an acknowledged improved understanding of the technology involved in themaintenance tasks, however it was not possible to confirm if such understanding has effectively improved the safe behavior among employees.
