This review was commissioned by the Research and Development Division of the
Department of Health to inform the work of the Nutrition Unit by identifying the
current state of knowledge of obesity, and to highlight future research needs. The
document aims to summarise the evidence about the effectiveness of interventions in
preventing and treating obesity, and the maintenance of weight loss, from randomised
controlled trials. It focuses on behavioural, dietary, exercise, surgical,
pharmacological and complementary interventions.
