This study is concerned about how some theoretical conceptions of power, which are presents within the organization study field, specially those which understand power as a strategic capacity of someone (or some organization) to achieve external goals, can restrict theorganization phenomenon comprehension, due to the instrumental view that it assumes about people relations.Beginning from the supposition that the theory of power is an important tool in the organization analysis activity, the actual study wills to identify, through a bibliographyrevision which involves other fields of social knowledge beyond the organization study one, other theoretical conceptions of power, that can potentially aid those which are based on the instrumental rationality, in order to promote a more complete understanding of the organization life. However, it does not mean that the instrumentalist conceptions of power are fully inappropriate for the organization analysis activity. As this study tries to demonstrate, they seem to be suitable for the analysis of a broad band of organizations, specially the bureaucracy. However, they may be insufficient for the analysis of other sorts of organizations, where people relations are less instrumental. Willing to contribute to the development of the organizational study field, more precisely to the organization analysis activities in this field, this work tries to bring some theoretical and methodological reflections about power, which can be helpful within the activity of organization analysis. In this way, its target are the scholars, researchers and/or observers, who are occupied with organization phenomenon understanding and reflection. |
