Descripción Originally, this work intended to verify and analyze which conception of reading orients the works of the teacher in relation to language teaching, if and how the teacher aimedat altering his/her pedagogical practice regarding the production of reading with the introduction of the textbook for the first time in Brazilian public high schools by the Federal Government. Actually, this objective was achieved, but, for being an ethnographic research, other nuances of such a process emerged and then I opted for analyzing them. The study revealed some categories of silencing in mother tongue teaching practices as well as in teaching orientations determined by Brazilian public policies. This topic is part of the last chapter when it has been discussed the relationshipbetween the concepts of silence in the pedagogical process, under the perspective of silencing. It has been maden an analyze about the proposal to attribute sense to the texts worked in the book Português: Linguagens, used by the teachers in the first year of the High Shcool and their students, at Escola Estadual da Fonte Nova, and the adopted conception of language, text and language teaching, is being conducted. For this purpose, it has been done a historical-bibliographic approach, synthesizing the official history of formal and academic education in Brazil, the history of the textbook, and the policies concerning such a material.
