The search for profitable results by companies relies in great part on the corporate strategy regarding investment choices. A company must analyze and answer questions and challenges intrinsic to not only the project but also thepotential variables and its positive and negative impact. These variables must be considered based on company?s risk tolerance profile with respect to any given project and its decision making process. This dissertation aims to describe the corporate strategy and investment choices undertaken by the significant cellulose industry segment located in the Southern part of Bahia. The company in question invested heavily in the construction of a cellulose production plant aimed to supply the foreign market. The considerable investment made the company one of the most important business in the region, which led me to choose it for my dissertation. Another reason for this study relies on the fact this industry makes investment decisions based on a number of risk variables, such as political and environmental factors, which could affect the investment strategy?the farming of eucalyptus, one of the raw materials for the cellulose production, and its impact to the industry?s results, for example. This study investigates these variables, reviews the discussions around cellulose companies and researches how the company in question considers, controls and mitigates the influence of potential risks that are part of normal course of business. The study used bibliographies, scholarly articles, and semi-structured interviews. It was noted that the industry deploys well-known techniques of investment valuation, including the use of risk-based scenario simulations and rigorous compliance with environment law and regulations, as well as risk mitigation techniques, which shows familiarity and understanding with principal theories on valuation and long-term investments.
