The importance of the role of lexis in teaching and learning English as a foreign language (EFL) has increased as shown by the number of research articles and conference presentations in the last few years. This growth depicts a major attention and interest over an item ? lexis ? which was considered as having a secondary role in the process of teaching and learning. The present paper has as its objectives to prove the efficacy of the lexical approach techniques in developing the lexical competence of students of English as a foreign language. The study was conducted utilizing the deductive-hypothetical method. In this action research the groups were selected according to language proficiency and the comparative statistical analysis and qualitative analysis of the results, done at two different stages of the research, reveal a positive result in the development of the apprentice lexical competence through the reduction of the number of lexical errors made ? in three of the four variables researched - and through student consciousness raising on the existence and importance of collocations in the development of their lexical competence. Although this paper is not conclusive, it does suggest that the use of the techniques proposed in the lexical approach contribute to the development of lexical competence. However, further studies are necessary in the area of the development of lexical competence in EFL learners. |
