This dissertation analyzes the SV/VS order variations in inaccusative verb constructions in 18 (eighteen interviews, taken from The Basic Corpus of the Rural Afro-Brazilian Dialect, in the State of Bahia, trying to reconcile a variational socio-linguistic approach (cf. LABOV, 1972) with a theoretical generative apparatus (cf. CHOMSKY, 1981; 1986). The analyzed corpus deals with three communities in different parts of the State of Bahia, in which slave workers were settled: ?Helvécia,? in the far south of the State; ?Cinzento,? in the semiarid; and ?Sapé,? on the environs of the All Saints Bay. As object of this study, the perspective of one of the orders ? the VS order ? is taken, aiming to characterize the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors that condition it, the latter ones in function of the external motivations (social-historical), linked to these rather isolated rural Afro-Brazilian communities. The statistical analysis shows that there are syntactic and semantic-discourse factors, relevant to the VS order, predominating over the inaccusative verb nature, in relation to the argument it selects. This analysis concludes the SV/VS orders are not exactly a case of variation, but a phenomenon of heterogeneous configuration, in complementary distribution.
