| Descripción |
ERP Systems (enterprise resource planning) have been widely spread over the industrial sector since the nineties. Their implementation, replacing the old legacy systems, promoted a level of integration of the processes never reached by the adopter companies before. However, some features - especially their complexity, the fact it is a package which is both commercial and integrated - forced such companies to make greater efforts to adapt to their general logic. This study explores the phenomenon of ERP systems from the point of view of the adopter companies. The data were collected using three different instruments, each one made for a specific hierarchical level: high management, middle management and users. The results suggested that the opinion of the users is significantly different from the one of the managers. Nevertheless, there is a convergence of opinions of the middle and high levels of management. One of the companies was studied during the period of systems implementation and its specific results revealed a significant drop of the evaluation average among the users, while the average of the management levels was similar compared to the other companies. Some data suggested that the ERP systems still supported company operation, but just partially and concentrated on areas whose procedures are similar among companies, especially, industrial ones. There is a perception, by the users, that ERP systems don?t offer the required flexibility. The author also suggested two metaphors for this phenomenon: ERP systems as a corporate Leviathan, due to their ability to promote a significant increase in control, both in intensity as well as in comprehensiveness, and ERP systems as an informational ?conveyor belt? or assembly line, where mechanisms are created, through a technological innovation, to promote a time-and-movement control in real-time, similar to the one conceived by Taylor. |
