Descripción The genus Brachiaria consists of about a hundred species, several of them with forage potential and therefore of interest for breedings programs. The correct classification and the wide caracterization of accessions and progenies are extremely important to their success. This work was carried out to achieve the taxonomic certification of progenies and accessions used in the breeding programme of Brachiaria ruziziensis of Embrapa Gado de Leite through the evaluation of chromosome number. Information were also provided about the viability and characterization of pollen grain of accessions and progenies for crossing purpose beside the characterization of the leaf blade, concerning forage quality. From the genotypes to be tested, 77.7% from the accessions and 100% of the progenies confirmed to be. B. ruziziensis. From the progenies studied, 100% had high pollen viability. To the accessions Brachiaria decumbens, the low pollen viability suggests high meiotic instability and that this species is apomítica. The high P / E ratio and the thicker pollen grain wall of B. decumbens may be related to the ploidy level of the species. The progenies, with the lowest average for adaxial and abaxial epidermis and mesophyll are those with potential for better digestibility.
