This study examines the trend in refinance assistance rendered by the National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) under the Plantation and Horticulture scheme in Tamil Nadu during 1996-97 to 2001-02. The financial assistance provided by different financial institutions in Tamil Nadu under the scheme, stood at Rs. 6,291.87 lakh. Against this, these institutions received an amount of Rs. 4,179.37 lakh as refinance from NABARD, accounting for 66% of total assistance extended to various beneficiary borrowers. Besides this, NABARD had also sanctioned 8,569 projects under the scheme. This study points out that, to successfully consolidate and augment this scheme, NABARD has to take certain measures such as promotion of agro-based small industries for food processing and survey units, and promotion of capital investment subsidy to establish cold storage plants to avoid post-harvest loss of fruits and vegetables.
