This document (1) outlined how more comprehensive and intensive discussions among industry leaders would be
useful to more clearly define the origin and scope of the problems, (2) evaluated alternative courses of action, and
(3) established priorities for action.
On February 16, 1998, the first South Texas Produce Initiative organizational meeting was held in Weslaco, a joint
venture between the produce industry and the Texas A&M University System. Commodities to examine were
selected and additional participants were identified. The planning process was given the formal title of South Texas
Produce Initiative, while the planning group was called the South Texas Produce Initiative Task Force.
