Introduction
A neural network is a network of neurons. This high level definition applies to both biological neural networks
and artificial neural networks. This chapter is mainly concerned with the various ways in which neurons can
be interconnected to form the networks or network topologies used in artificial neural networks, even though
some underlying principles are also applicable to their biological counterparts. The term `neural network' is
therefore used to stand for `artificial neural network' in the remainder of this chapter, unless explicitly stated
otherwise. The main purpose of this chapter is to provide a base for the rest of the handbook and of the next
chapter in specific, in which the training of artificial neural networks is discussed.
