ATM is becoming a widely used technology as a
backbone for connecting data networks. An important
consideration when analyzing the performance of data
traffic over switched networks such as ATM is the
routing scheme utilized. The IP layer traditionally
handles all routing processes in TCP/IP networks. For
ATM, OPNET contains standard models that map IP
packet traffic to ATM virtual circuits. However, there
have been many advances in IP switches and IP routing
over ATM that should be considered. A simulation
model may need to incorporate hop-by-hop IP routing,
shortcut ATM routing and IP flow switching. This paper
surveys the current state-of-the-art in integrated IP over
ATM routing. Related topics in TCP and ATM are also
discussed. OPNET models for IP and ATM are described
along with possible approaches for model enhancement. |
