possiblecriteriaforjudgingthevalueofanimage. In thispaperwestepbackfromthephysically--based
modelthat underliesmanyoftheexistingapproachesto rendering,andinsteadconsidertherendering
problemfromamorefundamentalview:howisgraphical informationprocessedbytheuser?Using
differencesinartistictraditionsasourinitialmotivation,weidentifytheneedforanapproachtorenderingthat
isbasedfundamentallyoncognitivetheory.Existingworkonnon--photorealisticrenderinghasstartedtotake
steps thataddressthisneed,butusingamodelofcognitiveinformationprocessingweidentifyasignificant
researchproblem: thequestforaminimalrenderingprocess.
