The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture is part of the College of Biology and Agriculture. It was created in 1967 when the Department of Agronomy and the Department of Horticulture were merged to strengthen both programs. The new department was part of the College of Biological and Agricultural Science that had been created in 1954. Prior to that, both departments had been members of the College of Applied Sciences. An important part of the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture is the University farm located in Spanish Fork, Utah. This collection is divided into two series: I. W. Derby Laws files and II. Raymond B. Farnsworth files. The W. Derby Laws files contain class notes, research files, publications produced by Laws, and student prepared research projects. The Raymond B. Farnsworth files contain information on the operation of the University farm in Spanish Fork, Utah; research on nitrogen-fixation in sagebrush; material on the Desert Biome project, various projects for Iran and a project for the Tennessee Valley Authority; as well as miscellaneous research files and data. The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture is part of the College of Biology and Agriculture. Derby Laws was a professor of Agronomy at Brigham Young University from 1960 until 1976. He served as chairman of the Department of Agronomy from 1965-66. He taught soil chemistry and soil physics.Raymond B. Farnsworth was a professor of Agronomy at Brigham Young University from 1946 until 1980. He served two years as the dean of the College of Biological and Agricultural Science and was chairman of the Department of Agronomy for fourteen years. He was widely know for his research on nitrogen fixation by non-leguminous plants. This collection is divided into two series: I. W. Derby Laws files and II. Raymond B. Farnsworth files. The W. Derby Laws files contain class notes, research files, publications produced by Laws, and student prepared research projects. The Raymond B. Farnsworth files contain information on the operation of the University farm in Spanish Fork, Utah; research on nitrogen-fixation in sagebrush; material on the Desert Biome project, various projects for Iran and a project for the Tennessee Valley Authority; as well as miscellaneous research files and data.
