Ptychosperma macarthurii is one of the world’s most popular ornamental palms, proving adaptable to a broad range of climatic and cultural conditions. Contrary to this apparent adaptability, the species is relatively uncommon in its native habitats in southern New Guinea and northern Australia, and otherwise occupies a narrow ecological niche. There are some noticeable differences between wild growing plants and those now in cultivation under this name, a situation often attributed to hybridization with other Ptychosperma species.
