The study has identified a model for the technological integration of information systems dealing with the internal security of the Brazilian nation?s capital. This model introduces a conceptual framework in accordance with the latest ideas about integration of information systems. It encompasses the areas of gathering, storage and dissemination of both data and information relative to public security through voice, data and image transmissionand recognition. The methodology used for this research has included needs assessment and case study techniques, which were applied to a sample of directors of security organizations within the Federal District as well as directors of telecommunications and systems administrators of the same organizations. The research has concentrated on the examination of present conditions of technological integration and cross-operational structure of publicsecurity in the Federal District. It has demonstrated the presence of a will for the promotion of information and telecommunications? systems integration within the framework of public security in the Federal District. Such an undertaking has found support both amongst directorsand technical personnel despite existing cultural and internal differences. The technical areas that have been visited by this research have presented sufficient points of commonality as to make this model a good point of departure for future integration. It is important to keep inmind the peculiar aspects and scope of each of the government organizations that have been part of the study. The findings have underlined that participating organizations would not want to relinquish their control over data gathered, produced or stored even though theyrealize the importance of making their findings available to all. The study has dealt carefully with questions of selectivity and security of stored data.
