During years the UFMS Universitary Hospital Surgery Center has beenseen the local patients and has given support to the university medical curses. Ithas been experienced expansions in its infrastructure to improve patient treatmentand to provide suitable work conditions to employees. Most changes in theelectrical system likely have been performed without taking into considerationsome regulations because it is not possible to stop some essential activities.Besides, the evolution of new technologies has been accompanying by powerquality disturbances, like harmonics, that can interfere in equipment work. The aimof this research was an evaluation to determine some surgery center electricalsystem and electrical medical equipment work problems that can endanger theactivities and employees/patients safety. The methodology included on-siteinspections, interviewing with employees and harmonics monitoring. Somedeficiencies in surgery center infrastructure has been noticed, like no emergencyenergy source that works immediately; inefficiency of grounding systems andsemiconductive floors, besides the electromagnetic interference problems inequipment. The harmonic distortion levels recorded were according tointernational regulations that were just used to compare values, because there areno Brazilian regular documents to electrical medical equipment yet.Recommendations were made on the results to mitigate, to prevent and to solvesome problems and the importance of Clinical Engineering professionals forhospitals was emphasized.
