Blister spot is currently considered as one of the most important diseases of coffee since Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, its causal agent, can attack shoots, flowers and fruits leading to yield reduction. The aims in this study were: (i) to assess the infection aspects (pre-penetration, penetration and colonization) of C. gloeosporioides (cg) on leaves; (ii) to study the colonization of cg on coffee trees under natural conditions; (iii) to study the epidemiology of the disease through its spatial dispersion, evaluating the disease dynamics and the foci structure; (iv) to assess the efficiency of fungicides on cg; (v) to evaluate the transmission of blister spot from the seed to the plant as well as the efficacy of the chemical control of cg in the seeds. Conidia of cg adhered on the plant tissue depressions and guard-cells forming septum before germination. Penetration of the fungus occurred directly in most of the cases, although some penetration occurred via stomata. The germination of conidia occurred after 6 to 8 h, producing appressorium 12 h and acervuli 96 to 144 h after inoculation. Shoots, hypocotyls, and veins of coffee leaves affected by blister spot had the xylem, phloem and cortical cells colonized by cg. In the fruits, infections of exocarp, mesocarp and endosperm tissues were observed. Coffee trees affected by blister spot had significant fruit drop e die-back even if sprayed with fungicides. Triadimenol and chlorotalonil showed high efficiency in controlling cg in vitro and in field trials, while mancozeb was inefficient. The disease pattern in the field was represented by isolated foci, randomly distributed indicating that blister spot is principally transmitted through the seeds. Seeds collected from diseased plants when sowed resulted in high mortality of the seedlings with cg incidence of 94.8% and blister spot severity of 86.8%, while seeds collected from healthy plants produced visually healthy seedlings. It is proposed that in this pathosystem the principal transmission via of blister spot is trough the seeds (seed-plant-seed). |
