Descripción

The general context of the present discussion is that of the theories elaborated in the last hundred years by Ethnomusicology about: 1. The definition of its own field; and, 2. Music as the subject matter of its knowledge. This context will be the backdrop for the discussion, whose axis will be the decades of 1950 and 1960 of the twentieth century. During these years, crucial events occurred towards the conformation of Ethnomusicology, particularly in the United States. The chronological and national framework under consideration, will not imply the detriment of a global vision of the area, since that period in North America represented the ethnomusicological project as a whole: reaffirmed the original germs of thought, completely assumed its dilemmas and pointed to displacements in the discipline, predictable in its origins. Inscribed in this context, the discussion is also located in the general framework - related to issues 1 and 2 above - of the various other musicologies, ie, Historical Musicology, Sociology and Psychology of Music, Aesthetics and Music Folklore. I will approach these issues in a modest way through the analysis of some authors of the above mentioned areas, especially Europeans. I choose and give center focus to the decades of 1950 to 1960, for reasons similar to those exposed for the case of Ethnomusicology. Finally, this discussion also covers the nexus of anthropology with music and ethnomusicology.
