SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online
(52,285 recursos)
SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) is an electronic library covering a selected collection of Brazilian scientific journals. The objective of the site is to implement an electronic virtual library, providing full access to a collection of serial titles, a collection of issues from individual serial titles, as well as to the full text of articles. The project envisages the development of a common methodology for the preparation, storage, dissemination and evaluation of scientific literature in electronic format.

Genetics of regeneration of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants - Dornelles,Ana Lúcia Cunha; Carvalho,Fernando Irajá Félix de; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos; Lange,Cláudia Erna; Handel,Cristine Luise; Bered,Fernanda
Five genotypes of hexaploid wheat and their F1 hybrids were grown in tissue culture after three different periods of callus maintenance, and were evaluated for plant regeneration capability.

Proposal for applying combinedselection to diallel analysis - Pacheco,Cleso Antônio Patto; Ferrão,Maria Amélia Gava; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Vencovsky,Roland
The philosophy of intrapopulation combined selection is the search for and identification of individuals with superior genotypic behavior, based on their performance compared to the family mean and, at the same time, of their family mean in relation to the population mean, through the weighting of the phenotypic values represented, respectively, by the within and among families heritability coefficient.

RAPD-PCR amplification of soybean DNA using pairwise combinations of primers - Corrêa,Ronan Xavier; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de; Faleiro,Fábio Gelape; Moreira,Maurilio Alves
In order to increase the number of detectable polymorphisms for the construction of a RAPD-PCR based intraspecific soybean genetic map, two primers were used at a time, instead of only one.

Biological and social traits associated with twinning among Caucasoids and Negroids - Beiguelman,Bernardo; Franchi-Pinto,Carla; Magna,Luis Alberto
The main conclusions were: 1) the proportion of women whose hospital and medical care expenses were covered by welfare program or who were indigent was significantly higher among Negroids than among Caucasoids, but twinning was not associated with social class; 2) the proportion of married women among Caucasoids was higher than among Negroids, and a greater proportion of Caucasoid mothers of twin births were married as compared to mothers of singletons; 3) Caucasoids and Negroids did not differ concerning mean maternal age, occurrence of labor, type of delivery, rate of previous spontaneous abortions, and mean gestational age; 4) when compared to women who bore singletons, mothers of twin births were, on the average, almost two years older, and had a lower proportion of labor, a higher proportion of cesarean sections, and a higher abortion rate, while the twins had a lower mean gestational age (three weeks) than singletons; 5) parity among Caucasoids was lower than among Negroids, and in both races mothers of twin births had a higher parity than mothers of singletons; 6) twins had a lower mean weight and height at birth than singletons, males were slightly heavier than females, and Negroids were slightly lighter at birth than Caucasoids.

Genetic interactions involving major genes at the dwarf locus in egg-type chickens - Custódio,Randolfo William Silvestre
Three egg-type stocks segregating dwarf (dw) and bantam (dwB) genes in female progeny were produced from the same 18 heterozygous (dwB/dw) sires used to inseminate dams of three different genotypes: normal (dw+), dwarf (dw) and bantam (dwB) dams.

Effect of taxol on chromosome aberrations induced by gamma radiation or by doxorubicin in Chinese hamster ovary cells - Dias,Francisca da Luz; Antunes,Lusânia M.G.; Takahashi,Catarina S.
The effect of combinations of taxol (0.08 mug/ml) with doxorubicin (DXR, 0.5 or 1.0 mug/ml) or gamma radiation (20 or 40 cGy) was examined in two different treatment schedules (pretreatment or simultaneous treatment) using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells treated at the G2 phase of the cell cycle.

Clastogenic activity of integerrimine determined in mouse micronucleus assays - Gimmler-Luz,Maria Clara; Erdtmann,Bernardo
The pyrrolizidine alkaloid integerrimine, obtained from Senecio brasiliensis, was tested by acute dosing at two concentrations (18.75 and 37.5 mg/kg), and at different times, to establish its ability to induce micronuclei in mouse erythrocytes.

Extraction of genomic DNA from Melipona quadrifasciata (Hymenoptera: Apidae, Meliponinae) - Waldschmidt,Ana Maria; Salomão,Tânia Maria Fernandes; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de; Campos,Lúcio de Antônio Oliveira
The objective of the present study was to test three different procedures for DNA extraction of Melipona quadrifasciata based on existing methods for DNA extraction of Apis, plants and fungi.
