    A series of recommendations to end poverty by the year 2015 is the subject of two talks in central Ohio by Jeffrey Sachs, special advisor to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and Director of the U.N. Millennium Project. Sachs will hold a press conference at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday (10/5) at Ohio State's Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Avenue. At 3 p.m., he will discuss "The End of Poverty" at the Ohio Union West Ballroom, 1739 N. High Street.     Peace Science Society (International), an academic group that encourages the scientific study of peace and conflict, will hold its 2006 North American Meeting this weekend in Columbus.

  4. Mershon Center to hold Peace Matters conference

    The Mershon Center for International Security Studies will hold “Peace Matters: A Forum on the Discipline and Practice of Peace and Conflict Studies” on Friday-Saturday, May 11-12, at The Ohio State University’s Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. This conference, co-sponsored by the Ohio Council of Churches, will be an interdisciplinary workshop on peace and conflict studies in the United States.

  5. Noted historian to discuss reform of United Nations

    Reform of the United Nations will be the topic of a lecture by the former secretariat to the international commission studying the future of the organization on Thursday, April 12, at 4 p.m. at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater, 1871 N. High St. Paul Kennedy, J. Richardson Dilworth professor of history and director of international security studies at Yale University, will speak on “Reforming the United Nations: Mission Impossible?”

  7. Expert on Iraqi women to speak at Ohio State

    The role of women in modern-day Iraq will be the topic of a talk by an expert in the field at on Monday, April 9, at noon at The Ohio State University’s Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Nadje Al-Ali, senior lecturer in social anthropology at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter in Britain, will speak on “Iraqi Women Between Dictatorships, Wars, Sanctions and Occupation.”

  8. Mershon Center seeks applicants for new Mason Chair

    In 1997, Major General Raymond E. Mason Jr. (ret.) gave \$500,000 to fund an endowed professorship in military history at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Now, the Mason Foundation has generously agreed to give \$600,000 more to turn the endowed professorship into an endowed chair. The Mershon Center and Department of History are conducting a joint search to fill the new position.

  9. Conference brings Israeli, Palestinian scholars to Columbus

    "Jerusalem: Cultures and Communities in Contention" will be the subject of a conference held Nov. 27-28 at The Ohio State University's Mershon Center for International Security Studies. The working meeting brings together two Israeli and two Palestinian scholars to complete a manuscript begun in the 1990s.
