  2. Objective assessment based on motion-related metrics and technical performance in laparoscopic suturing

Sánchez Margallo, Juan Antonio; Sánchez Margallo, Francisco Miguel; Oropesa García, Ignacio; Enciso Sanz, S.; Gómez Aguilera, Enrique J.
Motion analysis is employed to assess minimally invasive surgical psychomotor skills in box trainers. Tracking of laparoscopic instruments requires sensor-based systems that can be expensive, limit movements and modify their ergonomic properties. We evaluate the feasibility of using Leap Motion as a cheap, unobtrusive alternative. Four experiments were performed to determine its precision while tracking a laparoscopic instrument inside and outside a box trainer. Static long and short term precision of the Leap Motion was <2.5 mm. Precision between 12 different positions within the box trainer was <0.7 mm for all measured distances between neighbors. Dynamic precision when moving the...

  3. Modelling the effect of insulin on the disposal of meal-attributable glucose in type 1 diabetes

García García, Fernando; Hovorka, Roman; Wilinska, Malgorzata E.; Elleri, Daniela; Hernando Pérez, María Elena
The management of postprandial glucose excursions in type 1 diabetes has a major impact on overall glycaemic control. In this work, we propose and evaluate various mechanistic models to characterize the disposal of meal-attributable glucose. Sixteen young volunteers with type 1 diabetes were subject to a variable-target clamp which replicated glucose profiles observed after a highglycaemic- load (n = 8) or a low-glycaemic-load (n = 8 ) evening meal. [6,6-2H2] and [U-13C;1,2,3,4,5,6,6-2H7] glucose tracers were infused to, respectively, mimic: (a) the expected post-meal suppression of endogenous glucose production and (b) the appearance of glucose due to a standard meal. Six...

  5. The effect of band offsets in quantum dots

Panchak, Aleksandr; Luque López, Antonio; Vlasov, Alexey; Andreev, Viacheslav M.; Martí Vega, Antonio
The insertion of quantum dots in a host material produces band offsets which are greatly dependent on the field of strains brought about by this insertion. Based on the Empiric KP Hamiltonian model, the energy spectrum of the quantum dot/host system is easily calculated and a relationship between the conduction and valence band offsets is determined by the energy at which the lowest peak of the sub-bandgap quantum efficiency of an intermediate band solar cell is situated; therefore knowledge of the valence band offset leads to knowledge of both offsets. The calculated sub-bandgap quantum efficiency due to the quantum dot...

  11. Predictive capabilities of twitter, applied for general elections in Spain based on comments and geolocated users

Franco Riquelme, José Nicanor; Ordieres Meré, Joaquín Bienvenido
Sentiment analysis is based on subjectivity research, in other words, determining the feelings of messages from users regarding some topics, products, movies, music, etc. That should be judged in terms to classify the polarity of a document, sentence, or aspect levels.

  12. Lean practices implementation, their criticalities and their relationships with operational responsiveness and firm performance

Sanctis, Ilaria de; Ciarapica, Filippo E.; Ordieres Meré, Joaquín Bienvenido
In the last few years, at European Union level, companies are facing many obstacles due to macroeconomic instability. In order to stay competitive and survive in the present world turmoil, companies must seek to new ways of reducing costs, increase the quality of the products and meet the ongoing changes in the market. Driven by the success performed by Toyota and several other organizations worldwide, a growing number of firms have been adopting Lean manufacturing practices to fulfill market needs, reduce costs, and gain competitive advantages over competitors. But, although many firms report large benefits from Lean implementation, Lean is...

  13. Tree-livestock interaction promotes nutrient shift and influences plant species richness in orchards

Schmitz, Anjia; López Sánchez, Aida; Roig Gómez, Sonia; Isselstein, Johannes
Orchards are traditional agroforestry elements in agricultural landscapes and valuable for nature conservation in Europe. However, their diversity is endangered due to farmland intensification or abandonment. Grazing management promotes plant species diversity but grazers are suspected to harm trees through debarking. We studied 42 orchards within the Rhenish uplands (Germany) and compared horses, cattle and sheep grazing. We analysed how grassland diversity is promoted by the presence of trees and modified by grazing management, as well as how grazers may impact trees. Plant species richness benefited from tree presence, but was not affected by tree-cover and only slightly by grazer...

  14. Towards a holistic indicator of flow disturbance impact: fish community size spectra

Alonso González, Carlos; Herranz, Javier; Solana Gutierrez, Joaquin; Garcia De Jalon Lastra, Diego; Noble, Richard
Fish size-spectra provide a simple synthetic metric to assess the effects of pressures on the overall function of river ecosystems. An exploration of the effects of hydrological pressures on this metric is addressed in order to test its sensitiveness as a potential holistic indicator of ecological integrity. A set of 652 sampling sites with individual fish length data were used to compare the size-spectra among unimpaired sites and sites only affected by hydrological pressures. The variation of size-spectra along a gradient of rheophily was also considered. Our results show that size spectra slopes are naturally steeper in rheophilic than in...

  18. The challenge of transversal education through teaching ethics in engineering: From hubris to hybrid

Muñoz Ruiz, Emilio; García Laso, Ana; Martín Sánchez, Domingo Alfonso
Challenge has been the driving force to carry out the project of ethics introduction in the engineering studies at the School of Mining and Energy of the Technical University of Madrid. The challenge was faced with the support of arguments derived from the analytical review of the modern scientific policy trajectory through Europe and the United States, with Spain remaining in an ill-defined situation, along the decades of the 20th and 21st centuries. The emerging ideas from that process were that a blend of top-down and bottom-up approaches intervened in science policy design and promotion whereas a hubris culture evolved...

  19. Stability of steady states of the Cauchy problem for the exponential reaction-diffusion equation

    Tello del Castillo, José Ignacio
    Abstract We consider the Cauchy problem ut = u + eu, x ∈ RN , t ∈ (0, T ), u(x, 0) = u0, x ∈ RN , where u0 ∈ C(RN ) and T > 0. We first study the radial steady states of the equation and the number of intersections distinguishing four different cases: N = 1, N = 2, 3 N 9 and N 10, writing explicitly every steady state for N = 1 and N = 2. Then we study the large time behavior of solutions of the parabolic problem.

  20. Strategies for teaching professional ethics to IT engineering degree students and evaluating the result

Miñano Rubio, Rafael; Uruburu Colsa, Ángel; Moreno Romero, Ana María; Pérez López, Diego
Abstract This paper presents an experience in developing professional ethics by an approach that integrates knowledge, teaching methodologies and assessment coherently. It has been implemented for students in both the Software Engineering and Computer Engineering degree programs of the Technical University of Madrid, in which professional ethics is studied as a part of a required course. Our contribution of this paper is a model for formative assessment that clarifies the learning goals, enhances the results, simplifies the scoring and can be replicated in other contexts. A quasi-experimental study that involves many of the students of the required course has been developed....
