  1. Statistical distributions obtained from the compression of monodisperse, soft and frictionless particles

    The cyclic compression of several granular systems has been simulated with a molecular dynamics code. All the samples consisted of bidimensional, soft, frictionless and equal-sized particles that were initially arranged according to a squared lattice and were compressed by randomly generated irregular walls. The compression protocols can be described by some control variables (volume or external force acting on the walls) and by some dimensionless factors, that relate stiffness, density, diameter, damping ratio and water surface tension to the external forces, displacements and periods.   4. Representing microstates of static granular matter in a stress phase space

    A stress phase space is proposed to compare the static packings of a granular system (microstates) that are compatible to a macrostate described by external stresses. The equivalent stress of each particle of a static packing can be obtained from the mechanical interaction forces, and the associated volume is given by the respective Voronoi cell.     In the context of the present conference paper culverts are defined as an opening or conduit passing through an embankment usually for the purpose of conveying water or providing safe pedestrian and animal crossings under rail infrastructure. The clear opening of culverts may reach values of up to 12m however, values around 3m are encountered much more frequently. Depending on the topography, the number of culverts is about 10 times that of bridges. In spite of this, their dynamic behavior has received far less attention than that of bridges.   15. Dam seepage analysis based on artificial neural networks: the hysteresis phenomenon

    Seepage flow measurement is an important behavior indicator when providing information about dam performance. The main objective of this study is to analyze seepage by means of an artificial neural network model. The model is trained and validated with data measured at a case study. The dam behavior towards different water level changes is reproduced by the model and a hysteresis phenomenon detected and studied. Artificial neural network models are shown to be a powerful tool for predicting and understanding seepage phenomenon.

  16. The influence of the section shape of box-girder decks on the steady aerodynamic yawing moment of double cantilever bridges under construction

    The yawing moment acting on the box-girder deck of reinforced concrete bridges constructed using the balanced cantilever method during the erection stage has been experimentally analyzed by testing different types of bridge cross-sections. Experimental results show that the yawing moment coefficient decreases as the bridge decks become streamlined, and that the yawing moment coefficient reaches a maximum when the bridge deck length is nearly twice the deck width.

  18. Wind tunnel study on the influence of different parapets on the roof pressure distribution of low-rise buildings

    High suction loads appear on roofs of low-height buildings. The use of parapets with appropriate height at the roof edges alleviates these loads. The performance of six parapet configurations to decrease the suction loads induced on roofs by oblique winds has been studied in a low speed wind tunnel. The studied parapet configurations include vertical wall parapets, either solid or porous, and cantilevered parapets formed by a small horizontal roof close to the building roof.
