2. The Socio-Economic Relations of Warfare and the Military Mortality Crises of the Thirty Years' War - Outram, Q. Michael Flinn wrote that the Thirty Years' War, fought in central Europe between1618 and 1648, "remains the classic study of the military causation of mortalitycrises".' Despite these words, the Thirty Years' War has rarely been studied fromthis perspective. The wider import of this paper is therefore thatthe new approach to the history of mortality, in which the contributions of socialaction and personal behaviour to mortality changes have been investigated andhighlighted, is one which promises a significantly deeper and more successful accountof the military mortality crises which punctuated the past and continue to afflict thepresent. 3. Making sense of theory construction: Metaphor and disciplined imagination - Cornelissen, J.P. This article draws upon Karl Weick’s insights into the nature of theorizing, and extends and refines his conception of theory construction as ‘disciplined imagination’. An essential ingredient in Weick’s ‘disciplined imagination’ involves his assertion that thought trials and theoretical representations typically involve a transfer from one epistemic sphere to another through the creative use of metaphor.
