1. Introduction to Real-time Control using LabVIEW with an Application to Distance Learning - Salzmann, Ch.; Gillet, D.; Huguenin, P.
This paper presents the approach taken to give engineering students the necessary competencies and facilities to implement real-time control solutions. This goal is achieved first by way of an introduction to the basic principles underlying real-time control. Then, by motivating the use of personal computers as a versatile alternative to more traditional implementation equipment. Finally, by combining LabVIEW and DAQ boards to form an integrated framework for fast prototyping of real-time control solutions. Control algorithms written in G (the graphical programming language of LabVIEW), in C or as S-functions (MATLAB scripts describing SIMULINK dynamical models) can be validated on laboratory-scale...

2. Modeling for Control of Fed-Batch Fermenters - Valentinotti, S.; Holmberg, U.; Cannizzaro, C.; Bonvin, D.

3. Advanced control strategy of a solar domestic hot water system with a segmented auxiliary heater - Prud'homme, T.; Gillet, D.

4. eMersion: A New Paradigm for Web-Based Training in Mechanical Engineering Education - Gillet, D.; Fakas, G.
The Board of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology has launched in 2000 a new programme to promote the use of New Learning Technologies (NLT) at the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology. The goal of this programme is to encourage a reform of traditional teaching through the innovative application of Information and Communication Technologies. In this framework, the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) has started the eMersion project, a multidisciplinary effort to deploy innovative pedagogical scenarios and flexible learning resources for carrying out virtual and real experiments via the Internet. The eMersion...

5. The Electronic Laboratoty Journal: A Web-Based Collaborative Environment for Remote Experimentation - Fakas, G.; Gillet, D.
The Electronic Laboratory Journal: A Web-Based Collaborative Environment for Remote Experimentation Georgios Fakas, and Denis Gillet Numerous tools have been developed that support the collaboration between students in education, tools that mainly include facilities for sharing documents and enabling discussions. However, these environments do not emphasize the use of facilities that sustain collaborative work in the framework of remote experimentation carried out by a group of students located at different places. We propose the Electronic Laboratory Journal paradigm, as a collaborative and cooperative environment for remote experimentation in engineering education. The Electronic Laboratory Journal enhances the traditional laboratory journal, by...

6. A Global Stabilization Strategy for an Inverted Pendulum - Srinivasan, B.; Huguenin, P.; Guemghar, K.; Bonvin, D.

7. Integrated Environment for Web-based Experimentation in Engineering Education - Nguyen Ngoc, A. V.; Rekik, Y.; Gillet, D.

8. Introducing Flexibility in Traditional Engineering Education by Providing Dedicated on-line Experimentation and Tutoring Resources - Ursulet, S.; Gillet, D.
Accepted to the International Conference on Engineering Education 18-22 August 2002, Manchester, UK Introducing Flexibility in Traditional Engineering Education by Providing Dedicated Online Experimentation and Tutoring Resources Sylvie Ursulet and Denis Gillet Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) School of Enginerring, ME – Ecublens, CH – 1015 Lausanne, Switzerland Tel: +41 21 693-5168, FAX: +41 21 693-2574 Email: denis.gillet@epfl.ch Abstract The clear distinction we had in the past between the open universities and the traditional ones is nowadays vanishing. While the open universities are more and more supplying online the learning material that was previously delivered by postal services,...

9. Evaluation of a Web-Based Training Environment for Hands-On Experimentation - Sire, S.; Nguyen Ngoc, A. V.; Gillet, D.
The role of evaluation in software development has been well established. It is of first importance in usability engineering. Over the last years, many interactive systems have benefited from user evaluation, including e- learning applications. As with other interactive systems, designers of Web- based training environments can benefit from the results of an evaluation to detect the strengths and weaknesses of their application, and to prepare the next version. However, it is not obvious to evaluate educational software. It requires the transposition of the usability concepts of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction to a domain that is at the crossroads of...

16. Dynamic optimization of batch emulsion polymerization using simulated annealing - Lima, R. M.; Francois, G.; Srinivasan, B.; Salcedo, R. L.
The aim of this paper is to present a global approach to dynamic optimization of batch emulsion polymerization reactors using a stochastic optimizer. The objective is to minimize the final batch time with constraints on the final conversion and molecular weight, using the reactor temperature as the manipulated variable. First, results from the standard SQP-based approach are presented to illustrate how this problem is prone to be stuck in local minima. Then, in this study, the applicability of MSIMPSA, a simulated annealing-based algorithm, is evaluated. The results obtained are only marginally superior to those reported in the literature. However, the...

17. Use of Measurements for Enforcing the Necessary Conditions of Optimality in the Presence of Constraints and Uncertainty - Francois, G.; Srinivasan, B.; Bonvin, D.

18. Analysis of Cascade Structure with Predictive Control and Feedback Linearization - Guemghar, K.; Srinivasan, B.; Mullhaupt, Ph.; Bonvin, D.
Abstract Predictive control and feedback linearization are two popular approaches for the control of nonlinear systems. In this paper, a cascade combination of the two metho ds is proposed, where control based on input- output feedback linearization forms the inner lo op, and predictive control the outer lo op. With this scheme, predictive control is applied to the internal dynamics instead of the system dynamics. The proposed cascade scheme is advantageous for unstable minimum-phase systems and for unstable nonminimum-phase systems with slower internal dynamics compared to the system dynamics. A stability analysis of the global scheme is provided based on...

20. Iterative Correlation-Based Controller Tuning - Karimi, A.; Miskovic, L.; Bonvin, D.
This paper gives an overview on the theoretical results of recently developed algorithms for iterative controller tuning based on the correlation approach. The basic idea is to decorrelate the output error between the achieved and designed closed-loop systems by iteratively tuning the controller parameters. Two different approaches are investigated. In the first one, a correlation equation involving a vector of instrumental variables is solved using the stochastic approximation method. It is shown that, with an appropriate choice of instrumental variables and a finite number of data at each iteration, the algorithm converges to the solution of the correlation equation. The...
