  1. Low temperature study of micrometric powder of melted Fe50Mn10Al40 alloy

    Melted Fe 50Mn 10Al 40 alloy powder with particle size less than 40 μm was characterized at room temperature by XRD, SEM and XPS; and at low temperatures by Mössbauer spectrometry, ac susceptibility, and magnetization analysis. The results show that the sample is BCC ferromagnetic but with a big contribution of paramagnetic sites, and presents super-paramagnetic and re-entrant spin-glass phases with critical temperatures of 265 and 35 K, respectively.   2. Obtención de espumas a partir de residuos de pizarra

    La transformación de los residuos de pizarra de techar en materias primas no tradicionales de la industria cerámica, es el objetivo del presente trabajo. Sin la adición de agentes espumantes, mediante la alteración que sufren los componentes de la pizarra cuando la misma es sometida a un calentamiento en atmósfera no oxidante, se han alcanzado espumas de poro cerrado o cerámica porosa de color gris oscuro con densidades próximas a 0,3 g/cm3 en las que las paredes están formadas principalmente por una fase vítrea.   3. Synthesis, characterization, bioactivity and biocompatibility of nanostructured materials based on the wollastonite-poly(ethylmethacrylate-co-vinylpyrrolidone) system

    Composite materials are very promising biomaterials for hard tissue augmentation. The approach assayed in this work involves the manufacturing of a composite made of a bioactive ceramic, natural wollastonite (W) and a nanostructured copolymer of ethylmethacrylate (EMA) and vinylpyrrolidone (VP) to yield a bioresorbable and biocompatible VP–EMA copolymer. A bulk polymerization was induced thermally at 508C, using 1 wt % azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as free-radical initiator. Structural characterization, compressive strength, flexural strength (FS), degradation, bioactivity, and biocompatibility were evaluated in specimens with a 60/40 VP/EMA ratio and ceramic content in the range 0–60%.   4. Modulation of the hydrophilic character and influence on the biocompatibility of polyurethane-siloxane based hybrids

    Organic-inorganic hybrid materials are known for their outstanding chemical and physical properties. Although some studies have been published regarding the use of hybrids for biomedical applications, relationship between hydrophilic character and biodegradation, bioactivity and biocompatibility has not been studied yet. The sol–gel method has been chosen for the manufacturing of siloxane-polyurethane hybrids for the exceptional potential of the method to obtain nanostructured materials. The effect of the amount of the urethane oligomer (OPU) on the structure, hydrophilic character, degradability, bioactivity and citotoxicity was investigated.
