    The synthesis and structural characterization of five Cu(II)-Ln(III) heteronuclear metal-organic frameworks of formula {[Ln4Cu 4(H2O)26(bta)5]·mH 2O}n and {[Ln4Cu4(H 2O)24(bta)5]·pH2O} n [Ln = LaIII (1A/1B), CeIII (2A/2B), Pr III (3A/3B), NdIII (4A/4B) and SmIII (5A/5B) with m/p = 20 (1A)/16 (1B), 18 (2A)/16 (2B), 14 (3A)/16 (3B), 22 (4A)/16 (4B) and 21 (5A)/14 (5B); H4bta =1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (1-5)] have been performed.   2. Modelling current voltage characteristics of practical superconductors

    Based on recent experimental results, and in the light of fundamental physical properties of the magnetic flux in type-II superconductors, we introduce a practical expression for the material law to be applied in numerical modelling of superconducting applications. Focusing on the computational side, in this paper, previous theory is worked out, so as to take the celebrated form of a power-law-like dependence for the current voltage characteristic.   3. A novel approach to the chemical stabilization of gamma-irradiated ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene using arc-discharge multi-walled carbon nanotubes

    A complete study was made of the stabilization of gamma-irradiated ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) using arc-discharge multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as inhibitors of the oxidative process. MWCNTs were efficiently incorporated into the polymer matrix by ball milling and thermo-compression processes at concentrations up to 5 wt% and subsequently gamma irradiated at 90 kGy. Raman spectroscopy demonstrated the generation of radicals on the walls of the MWCNTs and that the G/D ratio was altered by their generation.   4. Identification of the pheophytin-Q(A)-Fe domain of the reducing side of the photosystem II as the Cu(II)-inhibitory binding site

    Oxygen evolution by photosystem II membranes was inhibited by Cu(II) when 2,6-dichlorobenzoquinone or ferricyanide, but not silicomolybdate, was used as electron acceptor. This indicated that Cu(II) affected the reducing side of the photosystem II. The inhibition curves of Cu(II), o-phenanthroline and 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU), were compared; the inhibitory patterns of Cu(II) and o-phenanthroline were very similar and different in turn from that of DCMU.   5. Two novel coordination polymers in the family of lanthanide complexes with o-phenylenedioxydiacetato as ligand

    Two novel coordination polymers [Ce(PDOA)(NO3)(H2O)2]n (1) and {[Ce(PDOA)(NO3)(H2O)3]·H2O}n (2) (PDOA = o-phenylenedioxydiacetato) have been prepared using hydrothermal conditions and have been structurally characterized. In both crystal structures 1 and 2 the Ce(III) atoms are decacoordinated by oxygen atoms from PDOA ligands with chelating and bridging functions, chelating nitrato ligands and aqua ligands.   8. High-Temperature Tensile Strength of Er2O3-Doped ZrO2 Single Crystals

    The deformation and fracture mechanisms in tension were studied in single-crystal Er2O3-doped ZrO2 monofilaments processed by the laser-heated floating zone method. Tensile tests were carried out between 25° and 1400°C at different loading rates and the dominant deformation and fracture mechanisms were determined from the shape of the stress–strain curves, the morphology of the fracture surfaces, and the evidence provided by monofilaments deformed at high temperature and broken at ambient temperature.   9. Micropillar compression of LiF [111] single crystals: Effect of size, ion irradiation and misorientation

    The mechanical response under compression of LiF single crystal micropillars oriented in the [111] direction was studied. Micropillars of different diameter (in the range 1-5 μm) were obtained by etching the matrix in directionally-solidified NaCl-LiF and KCl-LiF eutec-tic compounds. Selected micropillars were exposed to high-energy Ga + ions to ascertain the effect of ion irradiation on the mechanical response. Ion irradiation led to an increase of approximately 30% in the yield strength and the maximum compressive strength but no effect of the micropillar diameter on flow stress was found in either the as-grown or the ion irradiated pillars.   10. Microstructure and mechanical properties of Al2O3/Er3Al5O12 eutectic rods grown by the laser-heated floating zone method

    Eutectic rods of Al2O3-Er3Al5O12 were grown by directional solidification using the laser-heated floating zone method at rates in the range 25-1500mm/h. Their microstructure and mechanical properties (hardness, toughness and strength) were investigated as a function of the growth rate. A homogeneous and interpenetrated microstructure was found in most cases, and interphase spacing decreased with growth rate following the Hunt-Jackson law. Hardness increased slightly as the interphase spacing decreased while toughness was low and independent of the microstructure. Se ha investigado el efecto de la microestructura, de las tensiones residuales y de la temperatura sobre la resistencia a flexión y los mecanismos de fractura asociados para cada material.
