  1. Supercontinuum generation from intense partially coherent laser beams in optical fibers

    This paper analyses the advantageous features of supercontinuum (SC) generated from continuous-wave (CW) excitation. It has been shown that both the generation mechanisms and the temporal and spectral properties of supercontinuum produced with CW pump lasers are different from those of generated by means of pulsed excitation, in particular the remarkable smoothness of CW-SC spectra. We show that these unique spectral features stem from the fission of the partially coherent CW input beam into a train of subpicosecond pulses induced by the modulation instability (MI).   2. Temperature effects on supercontinuum generation using a continuous-wave Raman fiber laser

    We describe the effect of temperature variations on supercontinuum (SC) generation in optical fibers using a continuous-wave (CW) Raman fiber laser as a pump. We achieve supercontinuum generation by pumping only ∼2 W of power into a 7 km-long nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF) in the region of small anomalous dispersion. In these conditions, the supercontinuum builds up basically on modulational instability and Raman. At room temperature, the supercontinuum covers effectively the S, C and L transmission bands defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).   3. Gain-flattening of fiber Raman amplifiers using non-linear pump spectral broadening

    We demonstrate experimentally that gain flattening of single-pump fiber Raman amplifiers is possible by use of non-linear broadening of the pump spectrum. In our experiments, pump broadening of a continuous-wave Raman fiber laser tuned at 1455 nm is achieved by propagation in a non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber with small anomalous dispersion at the pump wavelength. The broadened pump spectrum can reach a full width at half maximum of as much as 28 nm.   4. Novel InN/InGaN multiple quantum well structures for slow-light generation at telecommunication wavelengths

    The third order susceptibility is responsible for a variety of optical non-linear phenomena - like self focusing, phase conjugation and four-wave mixing - with applications in coherent control of optical communication. InN is particularly attractive due to its near-IR bandgap and predicted high nonlinear effects. Moreover, the synthesis of InN nanostructures makes possible to taylor the absorption edge in the telecomunication spectral range and enhance nonlinear parameters thanks to carrier confinement.   8. Mapas de dispersión cromática en fibras ópticas monomodo

    [ES] La transmisión de solitones en fibras ópticas aparece fuertemente afectada enpresencia de variaciones aleatorias de dispersión cromática. Presentamos dosmétodos originales para la medida distribuida de dispersión cromática en fibrasópticas monomodo. El primero permite realizar mapas dedistribución de longitudde onda de dispersión nula a lo largo de la fibra con muy baja incertidumbre. Elsegundo permite conocer el valor local del coeficiente de dispersión cromática auna longitud de onda cualquiera y puede detectar asimismo variaciones de tensiónen la fibra y concentración de dopantes.

    A supercontinuum light source is a high power and broad spectrum source generated by the propagation of pulsed or continuous-wave laser emission in a nonlinear medium. The generation of supercontinuum in fibers and optical waveguides is a phenomenon of increasing interest that has found applications in various fields such as time-resolved spectroscopy, compression of ultrashort pulses, light sources for WDM systems, the metrology of optical frequencies and the optical coherence tomography. In this work we present the generation of a supercontinuum in optical fibers using a continuous-wave pump and a conventional fiber of telecommunication as non-linear medium.
