The aim of the present work was to evaluate the variables that have an effect on the retention of Hgº and HgCl₂in fly ashes originated by bruning coals of different rank and nature. The results obtained indicate that the quantity of mercury captures depends on the characteristics of the fly ashes and on the mode of occurrence of mercury in gas phase.

The retention capacity of coal fly ash wastes of different characteristics for retaining the mercury present in gas phase during coal combustion was evaluated. The ultimate objective was to acquire a basic knowledge of the properties of the components of fly ashes, which are responsible for mercury capture. The results obtained demonstrate that not only the carbon particle content but also its different characteristics play a determinant role in mercury capture.

The aim of this investigation is to measure high precision Pb isotope ratios in selected coals from major world coal deposits and put the findings within the context of global atmospheric lead pollution. These values contribute to establish a background for identifying lead pollution sources. By
relating the data obtained in this study with data reported in previous studies it can be concluded that coal combustion is, even now, a significant contributor to atmospheric lead.
