Unfolding the complexity of interactions between industry and university - Fernández Esquinas, Manuel; Ramos Vielba, Irene; Jiménez Buedo, María; Espinosa de los Monteros Pérez, Elena
Universities and public research centers are currently considered a key element for increasing innovation performance and improving the competitiveness of firms. Recent studies suggest that enterprises use multiple channels in their relations with universities. Nonetheless, empirical research encounters difficulties for obtaining detailed observations. This article examines the links between industry and universities, specifically focusing on the diversity of situations in which these interactions occur. To this end, we present a set of hypotheses that try to capture the complexity of this phenomenon. For our analysis we use a survey of 737 enterprises that reflects the variety of innovative profiles of...

Key knowledge providers as sources of innovation in firms - Fernández Esquinas, Manuel; Ramos Vielba, Irene; Merchán Hernández, Carmen; Martínez-Fernández, Cristina
Studies regarding innovation pay increasing attention to the relations that firms maintain
with different actors in their environment. It is generally assumed that interaction with other
firms, universities and governmental organizations can be sources of knowledge that can
improve the ability to drive innovation. Nevertheless, there is scarce evidence with regard to
the specific role firms give these partners as providers of useful knowledge for their innovation
processes.
In this paper we present research-based insights on the dynamics of the Triple Helix
networks as a basis for innovation capacity building for firms in a catch-up region. Our main
assumption is that firms that adopt an open collaboration strategy...

Can Rational Choice Cope with Identity? - Aguiar, Fernando; Francisco, Andrés de
Social identity poses one of the most important challenges to rational choice theory, but rational
choice theorists do not hold a common position regarding identity. On the one hand, externalist
rational choice ignores the concept of identity or reduces it to revealed preferences. On the other
hand, internalist rational choice considers identity as a key concept in explaining social action,
because it permits expressive motivations to be included in the models. However, internalist
theorists tend to reduce identity to desire -the desire of a person to express her social being. From an
internalist point of view, that is, from a viewpoint in which not only desires...
