Southern California marine sport fishing: private-boat catch and effort, 1975-1976 - Wine, Vickie L.
The catch landed and effort expended by private-boat
sport fishermen were studied from July, 1975 through
June, 1976, in order to determine the magnitude and
impact of one segment of the marine sport fishery in
southern California. Fishermen returning from a
fishing trip were interviewed at launch ramps, boat
hoists, and boat rental locations from Pt. Conception
to the Mexican border. This report presents
quantitative data and statistical estimates of total
effort, total catch, catch of preferred sport fish
species, and length-frequencies of size-regulated
species.
An estimated 944,000 organisms were landed by 315,000
anglers and 16,500 divers. A large variety of species
was landed, but six species contributed over one-half
of the catch. Divers landed...

Diablo Canyon power plant site ecological study Quarterly Report no. 17: July 1 - September 30, 1977 - Gotshall, Daniel W.; Laurent, Laurence L.
During the quarter a total of 38 random 30-m2
and 152 random 1/4-m2 subtidal stations were
surveyed. Red abalone, Haliotis rufescens,
densities remained very low. There was a continued
decline in densities of giant red sea
urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, in
Diablo Cove as well as the North Control area.
The annual shore census of bull kelp, Nereocystis
luetkeana, revealed the lowest number of plants
in the surface canopy in Diablo Cove since 1973. The subtidal station data supported this observation.
Sea otter, Enhydra lutris, observations were
continued. A small group of otters continued
to raft in the Cove east of Lion Rock. Some
of these otters probably forage as far south as
South Cove.

Studies on the use of sulfites to control shrimp melanosis (Blackspot) (Presented at the 11th Annual Meeting of the Tropical and Subtropical Fisheries Technological Conference of the Americas, January 14, 1986, Tampa, Florida) - Otwell, W. Steven; Marshall, Marty; Martin, Roy E.
Shrimp melanosis, commonly known as 'blackspot' is a
harmless but objectionable surface dicoloration caused by
polyphenoloxidase enzyme systems which remain active during
refrigeration or ice storage. In the early 1950's sulfiting
agents, particularily sodium bisulfite was first introduced to prevent or inhibit melanosis, thus yielding a more valuable harvest (1). Such use of sulfites was 'prior sanctioned1 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1956 (2). More recent FDA decisions reaffirmed this practice, (3) but continuing regulatory scrutiny could restrict or eliminate the application of sulfite on shrimp. The regulatory action is prompted by an increasing concern for adverse 'allergic' reactions most...

Survival and growth of cut vs hooked commercial sponges in the Florida Keys - Stevenly, John; Sweat, Don
The present project was undertaken for the purpose of
establishing whether a change in harvesting technique -- cutting rather than tearing the sponge loose-- could insure sponge regeneration and thus reduce
the possibility of overfishing in the Florida Keys. (14pp.)

Criteria for beach nourishment: biological guidelines for sabellariid worm reef - Nelson, Walter G.; Main, Martin B.
It has been the plrpose of t h i s project to provide the basic biological and geological data together with summary guidelines which will allow the Florida Dept. of Environmental Regulation and project engineers to make the necessary permitting and design decisions for beach nourishment project in worm reef areas. The present work
seeks to determine the tolerance of P. lapidosa to
sediment burial, the tolerance of these organisms to exposure to hydrogen sulfide, the tolerances of these organisms to heavy silt loads in the water, etc. (37pp.)
