1. NTIGen: a software for generating Nissan based instances for time and space assembly line balancing - Chica Serrano, Manuel; Cordón García, Oscar; Damas Arroyo, Sergio; Bautista Valhondo, Joaquín
The time and space assembly line balancing problem (TSALBP) is a re- alistic multiobjective version of assembly line balancing industrial problems in- volving the joint optimization of conflicting criteria such as the cycle time, the number of stations, and the area of these stations. For this family of problems there is not any repository where researchers and practitioners can o bt ain realistic problem instances also containing information on mixed products plans. In this contribution we introduce a new TSALBP instance software generator that can produce problem instances having industrial real-like features. This generator is called NTIGen (Nissan TSALBP Instance GENerator) since it is...

4. A multiobjective genetic algorithm and robustness information function for time and space assembly line balancing - Chica Serrano, Manuel; Cordón García, Oscar; Damas Arroyo, Sergio; Bautista Valhondo, Joaquín
The time and space assembly line balancing problem (TSALBP) is a realistic multiobjective version of assembly line balancing industrial problems involving the joint optimization of conflicting criteria such as the cycle time, the number of stations, and the area of these stations. However, the existing problem formulation does not consider the industrial scenario where the demand of a set of mixed products is variable and uncertain. In this contribution we introduce a novel robustness function to measure the robustness of the line configuration when the production plans demand changes. The function is used as additional a posteriori information for the...

8. A refined GRASP algorithm for the extended car sequencing problem - Lacovic, Elvira; Chica Serrano, Manuel; Damas Arroyo, Sergio; Bautista Valhondo, Joaquín; Cordón García, Oscar
In this study, we investigate the performance of GRASP (Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure) mataheuristic that has been used for solving extended optimization version of CSP (Car Sequencing Problem) with respect to different parameters and proposed modifications for the algorithm. While maximum appearance frequency of option in segment is usually a hard constraint, in this study we treat all capacity constraints as soft constraints by giving them same priority when evaluating candidates for the position in the sequence, in order to achieve more balanced sequences as initial solutions for the local improvement phase. The main disadvantage of the described greedy algorithm...

11. The differentiated impact of role models and social fear of failure over the entrepreneurial activities of rural youths - Lafuente González, Esteban Miguel; Vaillant, Yancy; Gómez, Eduardo
The main objective of this study is to determine the differential impact of certain socio-cultural variables (such as entrepreneurial self-confidence, role models and fear of failure) on the entrepreneurial process of Spanish rural youths. In consonance with the new rural policy paradigm, the European Commission and the OECD are proposing entrepreneurship as a tool for economic diversification and endogenous rural development. Entrepreneurship is associated in rural areas with economic vitality and prosperity. Entrepreneurship in rural areas becomes a means for capturing and optimizing the true natural, social and human capital of a territory as well as a source of opportunity...

12. Developing professional skills at tertiary level: A model to integrate competencies across the curriculum - Sánchez Carracedo, Fermín; Soler Cervera, Antonia; López Álvarez, David; Martín Escofet, Carme; Ageno Pulido, Alicia; Belanche Muñoz, Luis Antonio; Cabré Garcia, José M.; Cobo Valeri, Erik; Farré Cirera, Rafael; García Almiñana, Jordi; Marès Martí, Pere
In the context of the European Higher Education Area, curriculum design needs to be based on the defined competencies of each degree programs, including both domain specific and professional competencies. In this educational context, developing students’ professional skills poses a new challenge we need to face. The present work proposes a model to globally develop professional skills in an Engineering degree program. Based on competency maps, this model allows careful analysis, revision and iteration for an effective integration of professional skills. We define each competency in terms of “dimensions” (or sub-skills), which are further defined according to three-level objectives. Competency...

13. Evaluation and assessment of professional skills in the Final Year Project - Sánchez Carracedo, Fermín; Climent Vilaró, Joan; Corbalán González, Julita; Fonseca Casas, Pau; García Almiñana, Jordi; Herrero Zaragoza, José Ramón; Llinàs Audet, Francisco Javier; Rodríguez Hontoria, Horacio; Sancho Samsó, María Ribera; Alier Forment, Marc; Cabré Garcia, José M.; López Álvarez, David
In this paper, we present a methodology for Final Year Project (FYP) monitoring and assessment that considers the inclusion of the professional skills required in the particular engineering degree. This proper monitoring and clear evaluation framework provides the student with valuable support for the project implementation as well as for improving the quality of the projects, thereby reducing the academic drop-out rate. The proposed methodology has been implemented at the Barcelona School of Informatics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech. The FYP is structured around three milestones: project definition, project monitoring and project completion. Skills are assigned to each...

The introduction of sustainability skills into higher education curricula is a natural effect of the increasing importance of sustainability in our daily lives. Topics like green computing, sustainable design or environmental engineering have become part of the knowledge required by today’s engineers. Furthermore, we strongly believe that the introduction of this skill will eventually enable future engineers to develop sustainable products, services and projects. The Final Year Project is the last academic stage facing students and a step towards their future professional engineering projects. As such, it constitutes a rehearsal for their professional future and an ideal opportunity for reflecting...

15. Foreign direct investment as engine of economic development in peripheral economies. What can we learn from the study of two different cases: the maquiladora subsidiary (Nicaragua) and a textile manufacturing subsidiary in (Albania) - Van Wunnik, Lucas Philippe; Kacani, Jolta
Using the analysis of two apparently very different cases, a Taiwanese maquiladora subsidiary of the garment industry (Nien Hsing Textile Co.) in Nicaragua and an Italian subsidiary in Albania, we try to verify the existence of the benefits attributed by many host governments to inward manufacturing foreign direct investment as engine of development in peripheral economies. In each case, we study three specific questions: (1) the technological transfer from the subsidiary, (2) the mobility potential of the manufacturing activities of the subsidiary, and (3) the evolution of the quality of the subsidiary (integration in the territory and complexity of the...

16. Improving communication skills: students' viewpoint on a content & language integrated learning project - Alsina Aubach, Montserrat; Fortuny Santos, Jordi; Lao Luque, Concepción; Heras Cisa, F. Xavier de las
The development of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) scheme in Spanish universities implies a greater participation of the students in their own process of learning and competence-based teaching. Competences are the ability to apply knowledge, skills and attitudes and one of such competences is communication. Students must be able to communicate using their mother tongue, but they should be able to use a foreign language, especially English, too. This paper presents strategies applied in the School of Engineering at Manresa (EPSEM) (Barcelona), in order to improve students’ communication skills in English. An experimental research has been conducted, focusing on...

18. Students' research on lean and green - Luján Blanco, Itziar; Fortuny Santos, Jordi
This paper reports on the contribution of students to a research project. Its distinct characteristics are the relation between teaching and research, the early involvement of undergraduate students in research and the aim of raising students' environmental awareness. A group of students taking a compulsory course on Operations Management were asked to survey companies on the existence of synergic relations between lean manufacturing and environmental performance, which is the research topic of a Ph.D. candidate. The research began with the design of a structured questionnaire. The students interviewed operations managers in manufacturing companies. Since this subject is part of a...

19. Ergonomic risk minimisation in assembly line balancing - Bautista Valhondo, Joaquín; Batalla García, Cristina; Alfaro Pozo, Rocío
In this work it is presented a variant for the assembly line balancing that considers simultaneously production conditions and labour conditions. Specifically, a new mathematical model is formulated to solve the assembly line balancing problem. The objective of this model is minimising the maximum ergonomic risk, given a specific cycle time and a number of workstations. This affords the evaluation of the ergonomic risk impact on the number of workstations of the line through an application linked to the Nissan plant of engines, located in Barcelona.
