  1. Polyacylated anthocyanins from Hebe

Cabrita, Luís; Justesen, Ulla; Frøystein, Nils Åge; Andersen, Øyvind M.
Four acylated anthocyanins were isolated from flowers of Hebe spp. On the basis of LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry) and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) techniques, they were identified as (1) cyanidin 3-O-[2-O-(6-O-(E-caffeoyl)-beta-glucopyranosyl)-6-O-(E-p-coumaroyl)-beta-glucopyranoside]-5-O-beta-glucopyranoside, (2) cyanidin 3-O-[2-O-(6-O-(E-p-coumaroyl)-beta-glucopyranosyl)-6-O-(E-p-coumaroyl)-beta-glucopyranoside]-5-O-beta-glucopyranoside, (3) cyanidin 3-O-[2-O-(6-O-(E-caffeoyl)-beta-glucopyranosyl)-6-O-(E-p-coumaroyl)-beta-glucopyranoside]-5-O-[6-O-(malonyl)-beta-glucopyranoside], and (4) cyanidin 3-O-[2-O-(6-O-(E-p-coumaroyl)-beta-glucopyranosyl)-6-O-(E-p-coumaroyl)-beta-glucopyranoside]-5-O-[6-O-(malonyl)-beta-glucopyranoside]. Pigments 2 and 4 are novel compounds.

  2. Medicinal plants: past and present use in several communities from the North-eastern Portugal

Carvalho, Ana Maria; Martins, Maria Elisabete; Frazão-Moreira, Amélia
Medicinal plants, past and present related uses emerged from broader studies conducted during several years inside 36 rural communities in Trás-os-Montes. This region, as other areas in the interior of Portugal, has seen socio-economic transformations since the 1960s that have altered landscape management and plant use. The surveys aimed to report traditional plant knowledge and uses (TK). In addition focused on the system of local knowledge on plant resources and prevalent traditional plant use and practices. Ethnographic methodology was used and consented structured enthobotanical interviews were carried out.

  3. Wild species used in the traditional pharmacopoeia of Trás-os-Montes (Portugal)

  4. Usos medicinais da flora silvestre e cultivada no Parque Natural de Montesinho

    Carvalho, Ana Maria; Fernandes, Mariana

  5. Traditional knowledge and uses of plant and fungi in the North-eastern Portugal: Potential Sources for Pharmacological Research

Carvalho, Ana Maria; Martins, Anabela; Sousa, Maria João; Pardo de Santayana, Manuel; Morales, Ramón
The ethnobotanical use of botanical and mycological species suggests a high relationship between local uses and chemical composition in volatile compounds(e.g.bioactivity of the secondary metabolites produced) of the wild flora from the PNM. However, these species have not been explored systematically as nutraceuticals or as species with ethnopharmacological potential. These assumptions increase the interest in current research on the chemical basis of traditional uses of plants and fungi.

  8. Traditional knowledge of basketry practices in a Northeastern Region of Portugal

Carvalho, Ana Maria; Pardo de Santayana, Manuel; Morales, Ramón
This poste r presents and discusses the local basketry knowledge and weaving skills of both men and women from 25 rural villages of Braganca, a region in the northeast of Portugal. The information was collected through 60 semi-structured interviews and partkipant observation. Pictures were taken to document the entire weaving process; a collection of artefacts was also established. Data on 30 plants used in the manufacture of baskets or other items were recorded and analysed quantitatively in order to establish the importance of each corresponding species. The collected data shows a high number of species, local traditional practices and different uses related with basketry. Special attention is...
