  1. Medicinal plant use in the north-eastern portuguese region: old practices and novel approaches within several rural contexts

Carvalho, Ana Maria; Ramos, M.T.; Ferreira, Isabel C.F.R.
For a long time, people from the most northeastern Portuguese region, known as Nordeste Transmontano, have been living in particular ecological and socioeconomic conditions and relying on interactions between natural environment and traditional farming systems, which enabled an adaptative resource management, enhanced local knowledge on plant-use, allowing the survival of a rich and interesting folk medicine. Ethnobotanical surveys were carried out with informants' permission and cooperation, using fieldwork and ethnographic methodologies in order to document local knowledge and medicinal plant-use. Moreover, applied phytochemical research was set out on the most used medicinal plants that have special cultural significance (more frequently cited, ie. frequency of citation...

  6. Microbial biomass and N mineralization in mixed plantations of broadleaves and nitrogen-fixing species

Pereira, Ermelinda; Santos, Sónia A.P.; Arrobas, Margarida; Claro, Ana Marília; Patrício, Maria do Sameiro
The present study was conducted in a 10-year-old trial of mixed plantation located in the Northeast of Portugal. This study was developed in the three following treatments: pure of Robinia pseudoacacia; pure of Prunus avium and mixed of Prunus avium × Robinia pseudoacacia. To better understand the benefit of the consociation of an N-fixing species (Robinia pseudoacacia) with broadleaves quality timber production (Prunus avium), we compared the soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, soil respiration and N-mineralization of these three situations. Net mineralization or immobilization of N in field soils is calculated from measured changes in the mineral-N content of...

Pereira, Ermelinda; Caldas, Sandra; Patrício, Maria do Sameiro; Nunes, Luís; Monteiro, Maria do Loreto

  9. Medicinal plants and folk uses in Trás-os-Montes (Portugal). An overview of phytochemical properties and bioactive compounds potential

Carvalho, Ana Maria; Barros, Lillian; Ferreira, Isabel C.F.R.
Ethnobotanical surveys conducted in north-eastern Portugal reported plant knowledge and uses of several wild species in folk medicine based on field studies using ethnographic methodologies. Taking advantage of a multidisciplinary team, besides botanical inventories and sociocultural and anthropological studies, we set out applied phytochemical research on locally used medicinal plants (more frequently cited, i.e. frequency of citation > 50%) that have special cultural significance. Experimental phytochemical research points to pharmacological effects that confirm the importance of the empirical use of these species and their contribution to a good health condition.

  12. Breed and sex effect on pork meat quality

Rodrigues, Sandra; Lourenço, Maria do Céu; Pereira, Etelvina; Teixeira, A.
Pork is one of the most traditional meats consumed by Portuguese people. From the 800 thousand tonnes of meat and meat products produced in Portugal, pork represents about 43% of total value. Also the idea that pork is not indicated for hypo-caloric or low in cholesterol diets is something not real and has been decreasing. The Preto Alentejano is a local non improved swine breed which survived during the last years owing to a demand increasing of Iberian products and the protection of origin designation products. Commercial pig breeds have great prolificacy and precocity, raised purely on an intensive way, using a more advanced technology that translates into a possible improvement in terms of...

  13. Cloning and expression analysis of glucanase genes from Phytophthora cinnamomi

Martins, Ivone; Meirinho, Sofia G.; Dias, Teresa; Jorge, Lurdes; Martins, Fátima; Choupina, Altino
Phytophthora cinnamomi is a soil-borne pseudofungus belonging to the Class Oomycetes or „water moulds' in the Kingdom Chromista (Figure 1). Is one among the most destructive species of Phytophthora associated to the decline of forestry, ornamental and fruit species, as well as of some 900 other woody perennial plant species Associated with this oomycete is the ink disease of Castanea Sativa Mill. Glucan endo-1,3-β-D-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.39) catalyzes de hydrolysis of 1,3-β-D-glucoside linkages in callose, laminarin and several carbohydrates found in the cell wall of plants and fungi. It is generally thought that glucanases play a role in plant defense by digesting wall components of the fungal pathogen. In yeast,...

  16. Characterisation of mycoflora and aflatoxigenic fungi from portuguese almonds: from production to commercialization.

Rodrigues, Paula; Venâncio, Armando; Lima, Nelson
Aflatoxins are among the most carcinogenic natural compounds known, and have been frequently detected in numerous agricultural commodities, nut fruits being among the most contaminated ones. These toxins are a result of the secondary metabolism of fungi belonging to the genus Aspergillus Section Flavi, namelly Aspergillus flavus, A. parasiticus and A. nomius. The early detection of aflatoxigenic fungal contamination and the preventive control of aflatoxin production seems to be the only viable way to respond to the rigorous limits imposed by EU legislation. In Portugal, knowledge on mycoflora and mycotoxigenic profiles of almonds is scarce. Our objective was to characterise portuguese...

  17. Polyphasic approach including maldi-tof mass spectrometry to characterise aflatoxigenic species of aspergillus section flavi

Rodrigues, Paula; Santos, Cledir; Kozakiewicz, Zofia; Venâncio, Armando; Lima, Nelson
Aflatoxins are toxic compounds which are produced as secondary metabolites by the fungi Aspergillus flavus, A. parasiticus and A. nomius growing on a variety of food products and are known to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic and immunosuppressive1,2. Aspergillus is a large genus, with a complex taxonomy. The genus is easily identified by its characteristic conidiophore, but species identification and differentiation is complex, mainly because it is traditionally based on a range of morphological features. One includes the aflatoxigenic species referred above A. flavus, A. parasiticus and A. nomius, which cause serious problems in agricultural commodities, and the other one includes...

  18. A polyphasic approach for black Aspergillus identification using MALDI-TOF MS.

Rodrigues, Paula; Soares, Célia; Santos, Cledir; Fraga, Marcelo; Venâncio, Armando; Lima, Nelson
The Aspergillus section Nigri is among the best studied fungi, having different commercial applications, but also causing biodeterioration of commodities and food spoilage. Although being well studied, their identification is not straightforward, and, recently, new species have been described in this section1,2,3. These new species were not only separated from their relatives in the section by morphological distinction but also from molecular point of view. The concept of species is clearly abstract and delimitations are very difficult, and often not consensual. Recently, Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been used to generate spectrum of protein masses in...

  19. Reservoirs: mirrors of the surrounding landscape?

Geraldes, Ana Maria; Boavida, Maria José
To assess in what extent the environmental quality of aquatic systems reflect landscape features several water quality parameters were determined in two reservoirs. Concomitantly, the surrounding landscape was characterized and the existing potential sources of phosphorous and nitrogen runoff were identified and when possible estimated.

    Geraldes, Ana Maria; Alonso, Miguel
O objectivo desta...
