  1. Patterns of parental emotional reactions after a pre- or postnatal diagnosis of a congenital anomaly

Fonseca, Ana; Nazaré, Bárbara; Canavarro, Maria Cristina
Objective: This study aimed to describe parental reactions at disclosure of a diagnosis of congenital anomaly and to investigate both the existence of distinct patterns of intensity of reactions and their association with post-diagnosis psychosymptomatology. Background: When receiving the news of a pre- or postnatal diagnosis of congenital anomaly, parents usually display acute grief reactions. However, questions arise regarding the variability and intensity of those reactions and their clinical significance. Method: Fifty-one women and 42 men whose infants were diagnosed with a congenital anomaly completed, one month after the disclosure, the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 and retrospectively evaluated their emotional experience...

  2. Examining the Links Between Perceived Impact of Pregnancy, Depressive Symptoms, and Quality of Life During Adolescent Pregnancy: The Buffering Role of Social Support

Pires, Raquel; Araújo-Pedrosa, Anabela; Canavarro, Maria Cristina
The aims of the current study were to examine the indirect effect of the perceived impact of pregnancy on quality of life (QoL) through the severity of depressive symptoms among a sample of pregnant adolescents, and to explore whether adolescents’ satisfaction with support from their mothers (SM) or partners (SP) was a buffer of this effect. Demographic and pregnancy-related data were collected for 395 pregnant adolescents age 12–19 and were controlled for testing the proposed indirect effect. SM and SP were tested as moderators of the links between perceived impact of pregnancy and depressive symptoms and between depressive symptoms and...

  4. Quality of Life and Adjustment in Youths with Asthma: The Contributions of Family Rituals and the Family Environment

Santos, Susana; Crespo, Carla; Silva, Neuza; Canavarro, Maria Cristina
This cross-sectional study explored the relationships among family ritual meaning, cohesion, conflict, and health-related quality of life (both specific to chronic health condi- tions and in general), and the emotional and behavioral problems reported by youths with asthma. Participants included 149 Portuguese children and adolescents between the ages of 8 and 18 who had been diagnosed with asthma and attended outpatient services at three public hospitals. The results showed that stronger family ritual meaning predicted a more positive family environment (i.e., higher cohesion levels and lower conflict levels), better health-related quality of life, and fewer emotional and behavior problems in...

Moreira, Helena; Crespo, Carla; Pereira, Marco; Canavarro, Maria Cristina
Objective: this study aimed to analyze changes in woman’s perceived marital quality and intimacy (communication and engagement dimensions) throughout the breast cancer trajectory. We also sought to explore differences between patients and controls on these variables, as well as to investigate the predictive role of initial intimacy and quality of life (QoL) on marital quality 6 months after the treatment’s ending. Methods: the sample comprises of 47 breast cancer patients and 90 community controls. Data from the patients’ group were collected at two time points: following breast surgery (T1) and 6 months after treatments had ended (T2). The perceived marital...

  8. The Impact of Gynecological Cancer on Reproductive Issues and Pregnancy: Psychological Implications

    Canavarro, Maria Cristina; Pires, Raquel
Gynecological cancer is the fourth most common form of cancer among women. Over the past few decades, the growing number of survivors has been forced to cope with the consequences of the disease. Of these consequences, the impact of cancer on reproduction has been receiving increasing attention. Research shows that the health care of these women poses challenges other than medical ones. Although the inclusion of psychologists in health care teams has been particularly valued, studies focusing on the psychological implications of the impact of gynecological cancer on reproduction are scarce. Therefore, the first aim of this review is to...

  9. Ecological Contexts in Adolescent Pregnancy: The Role of Individual, Sociodemographic, Familial and Relational Variables in Understanding Risk of Occurrence and Adjustment Patterns

Pedrosa, Anabela Araújo; Pires, Raquel; Carvalho, Paula; Canavarro, Maria Cristina; Dattilio, Frank
Adolescent pregnancy appears today as an intricate tapestry where different dimensions interact. In our study we examined the associations between individual, sociodemographic, familial, and relational variables and their impact in the occurrence of pregnancy and adolescents’ adjustment to it. Participants were Portuguese pregnant and non-pregnant adolescents (N = 833). Ecological contexts were characterized, and individual and relational adjustment (depressive symptoms and quality of life; perceived quality of relationship with significant others – parents, romantic partner and friends) were evaluated. Differences between the ecologies of adolescents in both groups were identified. Familial and relational variables were significantly associated with both the risk...

  10. Assessing infertility stress: Re-examining the factor structure of the Fertility Problem Inventory

Moura-Ramos, Mariana; Gameiro, Sofia; Canavarro, Cristina; Soares, Isabel
Background: Research has documented that fertility problems can negatively affect infertile patients life, by imposing an obstacle to one important life goal: the achievement of parenthood. The Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI) proposes a comprehensive approach in assessing infertility stress, by measuring the impact on social, marital and sexual life dimensions and the importance of parenthood in infertile patients’ life. This study examined the factor structure of the FPI, testing two alternative models. Method: A sample of 209 infertile patients was recruited in two public hospital departments of assisted reproductive technology. Measures included the FPI, the Brief Symptom Inventory, and the...

  11. Scaling the information processing demands of occupations

Haase, Richard F.; Jome, LaRae M.; Ferreira, Joaquim Armando; Santos, Eduardo J. R.; Connacher, Christopher C.; Sendrowitz, Kerrin
The purpose of this study was to provide additional validity evidence for a model of person–environment fit based on polychronicity, stimulus load, and information processing capacities. In this line of research the confluence of polychronicity and information processing (e.g., the ability of individuals to process stimuli from the environment along five dimensions of information load, interpersonal load, change load, time structure, and activity structure) is applied to the occupational environment. Using magnitude estimation scaling, college students in the United States and Portugal rated 42 occupations across five information processing demand characteristics. Results indicated that occupations could be differentiated by the...

Moura-Ramos, Mariana; Gameiro, Sofia; Canavarro, Cristina; Soares, Isabel; Almeida-Santos, Teresa
Few studies were dedicated to study the role of contextual factors, such as the socioeconomic status and urban or rural residence in emotional distress of infertile couples. This study aimed to explore the impact of contextual factors on emotional distress, either directly or by affecting the importance of parenthood in one's life, which in turn affects emotional distress. In this cross-sectional study, 70 couples recruited during hormonal stimulation phase prior to in vitro fertilisation completed clinical and sociodemographic forms and self-report questionnaires assessing representations about the importance of parenthood and emotional distress. Path analysis using structural equation modelling was used...

  20. Psicologia do desenvolvimento e estudo da cognição no adulto

    Machado, Teresa Sousa
