Diaz, Suraya; Báez, Marcos; Vieira, Virgílio
Geomyza tripuntacta Fallén, 1820 (Opomyzidade) and Aulacigaster falcata Papp, 1997 (Aulacigastridae) are quoted for the first time for the Azores adding two new families to the Diptera fauna of the Azorean Archipelago.

  4. Post-breeding density and habitat preferences of the Azores Woodpigeon, Columba palumbus azorica: an inter-island comparison.

    Dickens, Megan; Neves, Verónica C.
In this study we present a post-breeding estimate of the density of the Azores Woodpigeon, Columba palumbus azorica (Hartert & Ogilvie-Grant, 1905). During August 2003, seven of the nine islands of the Azores were surveyed using line transects and distance sampling. Distance analysis, stratified by the island of Terceira and the other islands combined, gives density estimates of 14.52 birds/km2 on Terceira and 5.14 birds/km2 on the other six islands. This indicates that woodpigeons are more abundant than previously thought. The woodpigeon in the Azores is likely to have recently gone through a period of growth. However, woodpigeon densities in...

  5. Taxonomic review of selected invertebrate groups collected during the Campaigns of the Prince Albert I of Monaco in the Azorean waters.

García-Diez, Cristina; Porteiro, Filipe M.; Meirinho, Ana; Cardigos, Frederico; Tempera, Fernando
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Prince Albert I of Monaco promoted 13 cruises that sampled the Azorean waters. During those cruises a total of 2624 nominal marine species were reported in the area. This work assembles the biological data provided by these expeditions to the Azores in a geo-referenced database. Faunal lists for seven invertebrate groups (Echiura, Sipuncula, Cephalopoda, Annelida, Brachiopoda, Chaetognatha and Echinodermata) are compiled. The checklist includes 331 nominal species, of which 310 are valid names: 1 echiurid; 11 sipunculids; 32 cephalopods; 130 annelids; 4 brachiopods; 14 chaetognaths; and 118 echinoderms. Eighteen percent are synonyms,...
