The use of veterinary drugs in livestock has become an integral part of the livestock industry
for the production of meat and meat products. After administering to the animal, a drug may
be metabolized in whole or in part, before being eliminated in the urine and / or feces. The
application of manure and / or slurry, resulting from the farms as fertilizer on agricultural land
is a common practice. So is there a growing international concern about the potential risk of
introduction of drug residues in the ecosystem.
In this work became the prediction of risk of environmental exposure to residues of veterinary
drugs present in...

The vegetation is a characterizing element of the landscape, their presence more or less imposing, and more in many forms allows us to identify other environmental features intrinsic to the medium, such as soil type, climate, presence or absence of water. Its conservation in areas where it is naturally present or made guarantees the stability of the landscape, and is an extremely important element when incorporated in a study of land-use planning in order to define the various possible uses for the different landscape units available.
This work aims to make known the way of distribution of santomean vegetation over the...

The purpose of this study was to determinate the factor (s) which modify the macroscopic appearance of packaged cooked ham during illuminated retail display, in order to minimize the number of product losses.
The results show that the main factor in the change of the visual appearance of cooked ham was the iluminance. The increase of iluminance caused faster discolouration of the product, however, above 60 and 120 lux for thinner and thicker ham respectively, ham´s macroscopic appearance changed after 1 day.
The lamp which allowed the better preservation of ham´s colour (from 1 to 3 days) was the one which presented...

Anaerobic digestion of organic matter. Biogas production from energy crop residues (Maize stalks) - Santos, André Manuel Simóes dos
The agricultural sector is one of the most interesting for effective dissemination of large-scale use of renewable energy, especially anaerobic digestion of feedstock from plant and animal origin. Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out with maize stalks, by apply-ing some pretreatments to enhance its specific biogas yield in anaerobic digestion, due to its methane content. Feedstock were pretreated chemically (different ammonia concentrations), mechanically (particles size reduction) and/or thermally (pressure cooking). The methane percentage in biogas was between 51-72.5% and it was evident that methane yield had the same trend as biogas yield.
The highest value of biogas and methane were found on...

Predação por mosca-tigre, Coenosia attenuata Stein (Diptera: Muscidae): estudos etológicos - Nunes, Raquel Maria Fazenda
Coenosia attenuata is a polyphagous predator of important pests of protected crops. Ethological studies were performed for improving the knowledge on this species. The predatory behaviour (preferential location and number of feeding holes, number of legs used for prey holding and the influence of prey colour in predation), cannibalism and mating were studied in laboratory. The influence of the prey flight direction (and way) was evaluated in greenhouse.
The most frequent location of the holes caused by C. attenuata in Drosophila melanogaster, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, Liriomyza huidobrensis, Diglyphus isaea and Bradysia difformis was the occipital area, towards the thorax, in dorsal position,...

Irrigation is an essential factor for the success or failure of the landscape. The
adequate design and functionality of an irrigation system is determinant to achieve the
quality, economic and environmental targets of the landscape.
This report starts with a historical outlook of the relevance of water in the landscape,
from Antiquity to the present day, where there is a global crisis of water resources. This
fact, along with the aesthetic and economic landscape concerns, is the main reason
behind the great present interest on the application of Irrigation Management Plans to
Landscape Architecture.
In order to correctly manage a dynamical procedure such as irrigation, it is recognized
that...

Chestnut honey is an important revenue for beekeepers in Aquitaine. This study aims to understand the influence of different factors: weather, the condition of the colonies, flowering, and the state of the stands of chestnut. The optimum flowering is reached in early July, but these dates seem to vary gretly from one year to another. Two hives were followed with a continuous system register of the weight and weather conditions (temperature, humidity and rainfall). The locations of the two hives have an abundant forest cover, but often older and abandoned. The Gelos hive had a superior production. Within 1500 m,...

Cooperação na gestão florestal. O caso das Zonas de Intervenção florestal - Marques, Marco André Gonçalves Neves
The Forest Intervention Zones (ZIF) appeared in 2005 as a proposal for the organization of the Portuguese non-industrial private forest owners. Today, these zones already have a national distribution and occupy a total of about 8% of the country’s mainland. This work discusses, firstly, the structural context of the Portuguese forest, which allows for the implementation of a management based on the cooperation of non-industrial forest owners: property structure and management objectives of the owners. Secondly, a diversity of types of cooperation that can be applied in this context is presented. Finally, this work demonstrates the territorial and socio demographic...

Increasingly, composting is presented as a viable alternative to deposition in landfills of organic wastes, with all the problems/issues that this option causes/entails. The product, the compost, as it is rich in organic matter is an asset to the soils and, therefore, to the Portuguese agriculture.
The main objective of this study is to assess the quality of the composts produced from spent coffee grounds for the production of aromatic herbs. This evaluation was accomplished through physical, physical-chemical and chemical characterization of compost samples before and after being sieved. The stability / maturation of the composts was evaluated using the self-heating...

This study was developed with two main objectives: to assess the contribution of different biodiversity conservation tools, and to analyse the present situation in the Mira’s Irrigation Perimeter concerning with the implementation of those tools.
This case study was chosen both because it is located inside a protected area, and its farmland has been occupied by many intensive horticultural farms in the last decades. The voluntary implementation of environmental certification schemes and the recent approval of a new regional plan allow assessing the relations between the two types of tools.
With a methodology based on a relative classification of the measures generated...

De espaço rural agrícola a espaço público urbano. A Várzea de Setúbal - Goes, Inês Vidal de
Setúbal prospered in function of its natural resources, gathering sea and river goods,
as well as the products harvested and cropped in agricultural activities.
In the 60’s, the city expanded, economic activities focused on industry, agriculture was
largely abandoned and urban sprawl was imposing on the most fertile soils.
The case of the Várzea de Setúbal emerges as an exception. Its frequent flooding in the
rainy seasons discouraged city sprawling and construction, sparing its fertile and productive
soils.
This large area is now abandoned and is no longer suitable to their urban surroundings.
The huge productive potential, along its valuable cultural heritage and the ecological quality of
the landscape...

It is widely known the economic importance of maritime pine, its current distribution area of resulting
fundamentally from human activity. This roughly corresponds to the coastal strip stretching from the
Tagus and Sado basins to the river Minho, extending inland in the North and Center.
The area where we performed this analysis is located in Herdade da Comporta, in particular in forest
stands of pine (Pinus pinaster), in a total area of 12 600 ha of which nearly 6900 ha are occupied with this
species.
Looking at the district of Setúbal and more specifically at our study area, we are faced with one of the
most forested...

The Landscape is a fluid and dynamic system that reflects the interaction between its ecological com-ponent and human activity. To speak about Landscape is therefore to speak about nature and human culture. The importance of the evolution of the agricultural and pastoral activities in the shaping of the Landscape, specifically in the North of Portugal, together with the structural role played by the me-thods of appropriation of agricultural territory, are the subject of this thesis.
Having recognized the contribution of the political and economical history of Portugal in transforming the Landscape, and accepting that the changes effected upon the traditional landscape...

With the objective of finding estimated yield models, it was collected data from yield components of a
Sauvignon Blanc vineyard variety from Quinta do Pinto, Merceana, Denomination of Origin Alenquer,
Lisboa wine region.
The method was based on the sampling of 32 spaces that correspond to 192 vines in four different
phenological stages (separated flowers, berry pea-size, veraison and ripe bunch). The data obtained
was then submitted to an statistical analysis in order to find the correlation coefficients between the
several variables and yield.
The results indicate significant allometric relations between the inflorescences and bunches variables
measured. The number of bunches explains most of the production variability (58%)....

The aim of this work was the development of an appealing fresh fruit translucent candy, with gelling agents, alternative to the natural fruit pectin.
Three fruit gel formulations were developed, named Fresh Fruits Marbles (FFM), two apple based and one lemon juice based. These were inspired on the traditional French patisserie products Patê de Fruits. At first, high methoxyl (HM) pectin (1.5%) was used as a gelling agent and at second a mixture of iota carrageenan/locust bean gum (1.5% /1.5 %) were used. The edible coatings were sucrose, olive oil and HM citrus pectin coating (3%). HM pectin (2%) was used...

Mineral oil is a by-product derived from petroleum distillation, applicable in the areas of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food, used as food additive when in the proper grade of purity for this propose. However, it can also be considered a contaminant, especially important in sunflower oil, due to the episode of the 100.000 tons of highly contaminated Ukrainian sunflower oil. This experimental work aims at implementing a method for the determination of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons in sunflower oil by capillary gas chromatography with on column injection and FID detector. For such purpose parameters like linearity, working range, thresholds, precision, accuracy and...
