Strawberry is an important horticulture crop which is traditionally grown in raised beds covered with plastic. The high cost of removal and treatment of plastics waste led to the study with films of natural and biodegradable source. The objectives of this study were to compare the effect of two mulchs, a conventional plastic and a biodegradable film, in productivity and the incidence and severity of diseases and pests. The test was conducted in greenhouses and outdoor and weather conditions, production, fungi and insects associated with plants and soil mycobiota were monitored.
The weather conditions recorded were considered normal for the production...

Pine wilt disease, caused by the pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is one of the most threatening forest diseases. The only known host in Portugal is the maritime pine, Pinus pinaster.
One of the strategies to control this disease is the establishment of resistant hosts. Thus, a pioneer breeding programme for resistance to this disease has already been initiated in Portugal. Simultaneously, and considering that the breeding efforts for disease resistance should also be focused in populations improved for other traits, a study of the variability in response to the PWN inoculation in a Portuguese population already improved for volume...

Food security and food availability are vital issues in any process of sustainable economic
development, especially for Cape Verde. With large limits availability of natural
resources (10% of arable land) and major climatic constraints to agricultural production,
the country relies on foreign markets for its regular supply of basic food.
This thesis aims to study the behavior of commodity markets, both at national and international,
at the same time you want to analyze the work of ANSA - National Agency for
Food Security in the sense of “regular” and those same regulatory markets ensuring food
security in the country.
This study evaluates the evolution of markets (especially prices),...

Excessive berry set reduces cluster quality in table grapes. In this trial, it was evaluated a
new technique to reduce berry set, by decreasing about 70% the light intensity. The study
was conducted in two seedless cultivars, Sugraone and Crimson Seedless, and consisted in
three treatments: application of 1 ppm of gibberellic acid at the end of bloom; application of
an artificial net over the plants, at the same timing, for 7 days on Sugraone and 14 days in
Crimson; and a control, where no berry thinning method was conducted at bloom. The
number of flowers and berries drop was counted. Net photosynthesis, transpiration and

The promise of precision agriculture is to enable a farm manager to manage large areas of an agricultural crop with the detail with which one manages a garden that is to effectively and efficiently use resources as only a garden can, as a result of its small size. This goal is extremely timely in the current context of agriculture, since there is the need to produce very high quality service at low cost and in an environmentally sustainable manner.
This work was devoted to a study of a basic precision agriculture resource: the yield map. For this valuable tool will become...

The extracted olive pomace (EOP) is the by-product of the olive pomace oil extraction industry, currently used in low value energy applications.
In this work, it was studied the valorisation of hemicellulosic fraction of this material to development of the production of pentose-rich hydrolysates for subsequent bioconversion into xylitol. Given the high content of phenolic compounds, some high value-added, it was studied the aqueous pre-extraction (APE). The optimum conditions for APE were found at 100 ºC, 60 min and a liquid to solid ratio (LSR) of 5 g·g-1. To obtain hemicellulosic hydrolysates, it was studied for both APE-treated and untreated EOP...

The objectives of this study were to identify: (1) the most abundant thrips species in
blackberry, blueberry and strawberry crops, comparing its abundance between cultivars and
crop plants localization; (2) weed species that may contribute to the presence of thrips and
auxiliary insects in the crops.
Thrips samples were taken from the crops and weeds using beating and washing methods.
Thrips tabaci Lindeman was detected in the majority of the plants and this species was one
of the most abundant species in the three crops. Thrips flavus Schrank was the most
abundant species in blackberry and blueberry crops. Drepanothrips reuteri Uzel was only
found in blackberry plants. Frankliniella...

This final work of masters focused on the characterization of coffee between blends with
different amounts of robusta coffee and also in the analyze of how the origins of coffee
arabica and robusta, from different regions, affecting behavior of blends.
The samples were separated into blends and origins, which afforded 48 blends with 3
different formulations and 6 samples of sources, 3 of arabica and 3 of robusta.
To obtain this characterization method was used near infrared spectroscopy, FT-NIR, in
which the analysis was restricted to the area of the spectrum of greatest differentiation.
The statistical analysis used was principal component analysis.
It was concluded by a qualitative...

Firstly, the influence of production system (soil vs. soilless culture) on different strawberry cultivar’s quality was studied. Results showed that only the soluble solids content, titrable acidity and color, (p>0,05) contributed significantly to distinguish the two production systems. It was also concluded that fruit quality is determined by the genotype.
The effect of different fertilization levels (increasing concentrations of nitrogen and calcium) was also evaluated in terms of strawberry quality and it was concluded that there were no significant differences (p<0,05).
The effect of the harvest date was observed in the quality of the strawberries produced. The analyzed quality parameters showed different...

Consumer patterns lead the fruit and vegetable (F&V) industry to diversify processed products in which F&V pulps are included. This study aimed to develop technological strategies to the production of refrigerated Rocha pear pulps. The main quality changes leading to products rejection are rapid and excessive colour changes and microbial outgrowth. Optimization of pear pulp mixes with different F&V (apple, pineapple, beetroot, carrot and pumpkin up to 50%) was one of the technical solutions used to promote the oxidative stability and sensorial acceptance in regard to the raw material characteristics used in the mix. Pulp formulations in which pineapple and...

For this study we produced three different formulations to obtain edible films and
coatings based on chitosan, incorporated with beeswax, glycerol and a surfactant (Tween
80). It was studied the effect of beeswas concentration (0%, 10% e 20% wax mass per
polymer mass) in the properties of the films obtained.
Regarding the mechanical properties of the films, the results show that the tensile
strength, elongation, Young's modulus, perforation tension and deformation were not
significantly affected by the wax concentration used.
The Water Vapor Permeability (WVP) and hydrophilicity of the films decreased with
wax incorporation. The WVP decreased about 99% due to the permeability of the films
