The high cost of removal and treatment of plastics waste led to the study with films of natural and biodegradable source. Pine wilt disease, caused by the pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is one of the most threatening forest diseases. The only known host in Portugal is the maritime pine, Pinus pinaster. One of the strategies to control this disease is the establishment of resistant hosts. Excessive berry set reduces cluster quality in table grapes. In this trial, it was evaluated a new technique to reduce berry set, by decreasing about 70% the light intensity. The study was conducted in two seedless cultivars, Sugraone and Crimson Seedless, and consisted in three treatments: application of 1 ppm of gibberellic acid at the end of bloom; application of an artificial net over the plants, at the same timing, for 7 days on Sugraone and 14 days in Crimson; and a control, where no berry thinning method was conducted at bloom. The extracted olive pomace (EOP) is the by-product of the olive pomace oil extraction industry, currently used in low value energy applications. In this work, it was studied the valorisation of hemicellulosic fraction of this material to development of the production of pentose-rich hydrolysates for subsequent bioconversion into xylitol. The objectives of this study were to identify: (1) the most abundant thrips species in blackberry, blueberry and strawberry crops, comparing its abundance between cultivars and crop plants localization; (2) weed species that may contribute to the presence of thrips and auxiliary insects in the crops. This final work of masters focused on the characterization of coffee between blends with different amounts of robusta coffee and also in the analyze of how the origins of coffee arabica and robusta, from different regions, affecting behavior of blends. Firstly, the influence of production system (soil vs. soilless culture) on different strawberry cultivar’s quality was studied. Results showed that only the soluble solids content, titrable acidity and color, (p>0,05) contributed significantly to distinguish the two production systems. It was also concluded that fruit quality is determined by the genotype. The effect of different fertilization levels (increasing concentrations of nitrogen and calcium) was also evaluated in terms of strawberry quality and it was concluded that there were no significant differences (p<0,05). In this work the response of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) to oxidative stress induced by potentially toxic elements (PTE) and NaCl was evaluated. In the germination and growth assays Cd, As, Cu, Mn, Zn (0-500 μM) and NaCl (0-500 mM) was applied separately for assessing the germination rate and growth for 2 weeks. Functional records were collected in 584 heifers born between 2001 and 2009 in the Murteira Grave herd of the Brava breed. For this study we produced three different formulations to obtain edible films and coatings based on chitosan, incorporated with beeswax, glycerol and a surfactant (Tween 80). It was studied the effect of beeswas concentration (0%, 10% e 20% wax mass per polymer mass) in the properties of the films obtained. Regarding the mechanical properties of the films, the results show that the tensile strength, elongation, Young's modulus, perforation tension and deformation were not significantly affected by the wax concentration used.
