The sea related activities always had great importance in Portugal, especially the fishing activity and the processing industry of marine products. However, in the last decades, the decrease of both activities has occurred, with a significant reduction in the number of fishermen and fishing fleet and a major reduction on the number of canning factories in activity, mainly due to the Common Fisheries Politics of EU.
In this work, an analysis of the species which make up the food product that retains the case of Auxis spp. (Judeu) and Euthynnus alletteratus (Merma), captured on the Algarve coast and recovered through the...
Influence of soil parameters on ectomycorrhizal diversity in montado ecosystems - Barrento, Maria João Hortas
This study characterized the composition and the diversity of macrofungal communities associated with four plots of montado situated in Grândola Hills, Southern Portugal, and evaluated the influence of soil parameters on ectomycorrhizal fungal diversity and abundance. Phosphorus, potassium, total nitrogen, organic matter concentrations and soil pH were the parameters determined. Differences in soil chemical features were found between studied plots. A total of 132 species of macrofungi were found in the study area being Laccaria, Russula and Cortinarius the most abundant genera. Also dissimilarities on macrofungal communities, particularly, on abundance and diversity, were registered among plots.
The influence of soil parameters...
Due to the large amount of mulch films used in agricultural crops and to all the environmental
problems related with their disposal, the biodegradable mulch films seems to be the best
solution for replacing the conventional polyethylene mulches.
The main goal of this work was to evaluate and compare the performance of biodegradable
mulch films with the conventional polyethylene ones in muskmelon culture during two years.
Beyond fruit productivity and quality, the impact of each plastic in the soil moisture and
temperature were also assessed. Taking into account that there are no reported
biodegradation studies realized in Portugal, it was also important to verify the
biodegradability of this...
Different management systems induce modifications on ecosystems functioning,
changing soil quality. In the context of growing concern for sustainability issues it
becomes crucial to use physical, chemical and biological indicators able to identify
effects on soil properties and processes. Such is the case of the Portuguese ‘Rocha’
pear (Pyrus communis L.) groves which represent an important economical value and
specificity, mainly in the Centro NUT II region.
Four orchards subjected to different management systems were selected (NT - no
tillage with permanent natural cover crop; CT+E - tillage with manure incorporation;
CT1 and CT2 - conventional tillage). Bulk density, exchangeable Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and
K+, pH, extractable P and...
Arundo donax L. is a Mediterranean energy crop with a high potential for the production of bioenergy and added-value products. Nevertheless, its exploration within a biorefinery framework still requires further developments. This work aims to contribute for the development of a strategy to upgrade its hemicellulose fraction, by means of xylitol bioproduction.
The raw material was milled and the influence of particle size on acid hydrolysis was studied. The composition of the hydrolysates and residual solids obtained did not differ significantly for the different fractions tested (< 2 mm).
Three Debaryomyces hansenii strains were compared in chemically defined medium (CDM), and their...

The present study consisted of (1) selection of pre-treatment adequate temperature/time binomial applied to the raw
material, (2) optimization of fruit and vegetables pulps formulation, (3) selection of pasteurization conditions to be
applied to the end product, (4) evaluation of untreated pulp (ST) and pasteurized pulp (TT) modifications, with
utilization of transparent (T) and opaque (O) packaging, and maintained in refrigerated or in frozen conditions. Pulps
were monitored for physicochemical, biochemical, microbiological, rheological and sensory parameters. The
optimized pulp consists in an apple base (41 %) and pineapple (31 %), to which cabbage (8%), pumpkin (10%) and
banana (10%) were introduced. The temperature/time binomial of the...
Phytoestrogens are compounds found in plants and, consequently, in animal feed, whose similarity with 17β-estradiol (E2) enables its binding to estrogen receptors influencing several endocrine mechanisms during the oestrous cycle. This study shows that coumestrol can influence the secretory function of the endometrium of the mare, modulating the production of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). Coumestrol was found in clover mixed pastures and in alfalfa pellets used to formulate a controlled diet. This phytoestrogen and its metabolite were also quantified in blood plasma of non-pregnant Lusitano mares showing its absorption, after ingestion. In in vitro experiments, the effect of coumestrol on PGF2α...
Estudo comparativo de 2 alternativas de dimensionamento duma rede de rega: alta e baixa pressão - Matias, Virgílio José Jesus
The purpose of this thesis is to compare two ways of water delivering in an irrigation scheme,
considering the investment and maintenance costs: high and low pressure.
The irrigation scheme considered is the “Circuito Hidráulico de Baleizão-Quintos”, included in
the Multi-purpose Project of Alqueva. The scheme is divided in 5 blocks, with a gross scheme area of
The secondary aim is to determine for the blocks that in the original project require pumping
stations (blocks 4 and 5), which is the combination between hydraulic head in the beginning of the
secondary network and pipe size along that network, which allows the best ratio between investment
The report aims to evaluate the indoor air quality and thermal comfort of the Santarém District Hospital imaging department.
The indoor air quality and thermal comfort, apart from affecting our well-being in day to day can influence and condition our future, so these parameters have been identified as a major environmental risk to public health.
The level of air pollution inside buildings can reach values 2-5 times higher than outdoor air. On the other hand, the levels of indoor air pollution acquire greater importance when you consider that in modern society, people spend over 90% of their time inside buildings.
We conducted a...

Maturação em queijo dos Açores. Determinação de ácidos orgânicos e metabolismo do lactato - Costa, Isadora Barata Braz de Assunção
The secondary reactions that occur during the ripening of cheese involve complex biochemical changes that affect the final characteristics of the product. Organic acids can be originated from the metabolism of lactate and can significantly influence the development of the sensory properties of the cheese during ripening. This work was carried out to study and develop an HPLC methodology to analyze and quantify organic acids (acetic, butyric, lactic, oxalic and propionic) in cheese. The evolution of the organic acids was then studied during the ripening of three Azorean cheeses. It was concluded that, in general, the organic acids content increased...
The growing urbanization and its peak in the 60/70 (sixties and seventies) left behind some concerns among which the correct form of landscape design and its aspects assumes a substantial part. The demand for construction quantity ignored several concerns about the urban environment quality. The overflowing occupation of urban landscape creates a great and undelayable need to transform the unoccupied spaces in service for the communities. The foundation of any project is made of the several sciences related to the physical world. Such knowledge was made aware from its significant interventions on the landscape. Today we go further besides the...

Requalificação do espaço público urbano. Caso de estudo - Bairro do Olival de Fora - Fernandes, Inês Neto Capaz Coutinho
The public space is, par excellence, the space for the community life. Currently, the introduction of values is demanded, although some of those values appear to have been forgotten.
As far as citizens are concerned, their growing demand and care for more qualified areas leads to taking public spaces into account when urban planning is put up. At any time, but especially in troubled periods, as those we live today, people will inevitably choose to be heard in the public space.
This study aims to demonstrate that the quality formerly present in some areas can be gained again through requalification. Regarding the...
