1. An autonomic system to characterize the physical and organizational context of public spaces - Ribeiro, F. Reinaldo; Metrôlho, José
Traditionally, context-aware applications are developed using one of the following approaches: each application communicates directly with sources of context information; applications are developed with the aid of reusable libraries for processing context information or applications have their own context models. These approaches not only require effort on the part of those who develop them, but also create dependency between the developed context-aware applications and the systems developed for obtaining and providing the context information, thus hindering their reuse in other applications. In this paper we present a system that autonomously characterizes the physical, social and organizational context of a public space and delivers this information to context-aware applications. Experiments show that it provides...

2. Integrating medical patient data with family trees to improve the quality of information - Sousa, Eliana; Jesus, Tiago; Neves, Lina; Costa, Mónica; Ribeiro, F. Reinaldo; Metrôlho, José Carlos; Correia, Ricardo Cruz
The way patient information is presented has been proven to have an important impact on patient care. This paper presents a software component to be integrated in a virtual patient record used in a Portuguese hospital. This component supports genetic oncology consultations and aims to help the physician needs to visualize the patient's family tree in order to diagnose hereditary cancers in both patient and patient descendants. This system allows the physician to view relevant medical information of the elements of the family of a given patient, add new tests, as well as record new cancer situations that occur in any member of the patient’s family. Besides the...

4. Tag clouds for situated interaction and place profiling - José, Rui; Silva, Bruno; Ribeiro, F. Reinaldo
Tag clouds have become very popular as visual representations of the main topics in document sets or as navigation tools that can provide quick access to resources related with specific topics. However, their ability to represent the information environment associated with any meaningful reality in a way that is collectively visible, actionable and easily understood may also be very relevant, even when the reality being represented is no longer a set of documents or resources, but a stream of interactions occurring within a particular ubiquitous computing environment. In this paper, we explore the use of tag clouds within the context of situated displays and services. We...

5. Informing and socializing in Interactive spaces: delivering the right information to the right users - Ribeiro, F. Reinaldo; Metrôlho, J.; Costa, M.
The dissemination of large displays and personal mobile computing devices has created new opportunities for the joint use of these devices. Together these devices can enrich public spaces, promoting new and more engagement interaction mechanisms, giving users relevant information and providing important resources that can promote conversations and group activities. In this paper we explore the joint use of public displays and personal mobile computing devices, as equipments for the dissemination of personalized information that is delivered to users according to their interests and expectations. Three main aspects characterize our proposal. First, it encloses in the same system two types of devices for delivering information: mobile devices...

7. Compressive strength at high temperatures of a concrete made with recycled tire textile and steel fibers - Santos, Cristina Calmeiro dos; Rodrigues, João Paulo C
This paper presents the results of a research work on the evaluation of the compressive strength at high temperatures of a concrete made with recycled tire steel and textile fibers. It was considered five different concrete compositions, with a water/cement ratio (W/C = 0.43), differ only in the type and amount of fibers. The compositions with smaller amounts of textile fibers were those that gave better results. The compositions with steel fibers showed a less explosive rupture showing the effectiveness of this type of fibers in the spalling and cracking control.

13. Removing Code Duplication with Roles - Barbosa, Fernando; Aguiar, Ademar
The existence of replicated code in a system makes that system harder to maintain and evolve. To remove replicated code the usual way is to use refactorings. However there are always clones that cannot be removed by refactorings alone. Some are due to lack of composition mechanisms in the underlying programming language. We propose the use of roles to remove such clones since roles provide a finer degree of composition. We sketch four role refactorings to remove code clones and apply them in a case study using the JHotDraw framework. Results show that roles have a positive impact in clone...

14. Refactoring to Static Roles - Barbosa, Fernando; Aguiar, Ademar
Roles can be used to overcome some composition limitations in Object Oriented Languages and contribute to a better code reuse, reducing code replication and improve code maintenance. Therefore, the refactoring of legacy code to roles is an important step in maintaining and evolving this code. In this paper, we present refactorings to convert a system to roles We also present some refactorings that enable roles to be even more reusable.

15. Composing Classes: roles vs traits - Barbosa, Fernando; Aguiar, Ademar
Code replication has significant drawbacks in system maintenance. Code replication can have its origins in the composition limitations of the language. Several proposals have tried to overcome these limitations. A popular one is traits. However, traits do not support state or visibility control. Static roles are also a way of composing classes that has the benefits of traits and offers state, visibility control and other advantages as block renaming. We compare both approaches on how they are used to compose classes, and how they can be used to reduce code replication caused by composition limitations. As a case study we...

16. Using Roles to Model Crosscutting Concerns - Barbosa, Fernando; Aguiar, Ademar
In object oriented languages the problem of crosscutting concerns, due to limitations in the composition mechanisms, is recurrent. In order to reduce this problem we propose to use roles as a way of composing classes that extends the Object Oriented approach and can be used to model crosscutting concerns. To support our approach we developed a role language that extends Java, while being compatible with existing virtual machines. As validation we conducted a case study using three open source systems. We identified crosscutting concerns in the systems and then modeled them using our role approach. Results show that roles are...

17. A mobile core-body temperature monitoring system on Android - Pereira, Orlando R. E.; Caldeira, João M. L. P.; Lei Shu; Rodrigues, Joel J. P. C.
Recently, Google launched the Android mobile operating system and several mobile devices already support it. This paper proposes a mobile Android-enabled tool for collecting, monitoring, and analyzing intra-vaginal temperature. A previous proposed intra-vaginal sensor acquires temperature values and sends the collected data to Android device over a Bluetooth connection. The Android tool allows women for real-time monitoring of their temperature with mobility support and following their daily life. Woman can control and detect their fertile and ovulation periods when this human parameter increases about 0.5ºC over their regular temperature. Other application of this solution includes the preterm labor prevention. The proposed system was evaluated and validated, and it is ready for use.

18. FPGA-Targeted Development System for Embedded Applications - Sklyarov, Valery; Fonseca, José; Monteiro, Ricardo; Oliveira, Arnaldo; Melo, Andreia; Lau, Nuno; Kondratjuk, Konstantin; Skliarova, Louliia; Neves, Paulo; Ferrari, António
This paper considers approaches to the design and implementation of embedded systems using XC6200 FPGAs. The methods that are introduced enable the synthesis of circuits that are modifiable and extensible, and that provide a virtual function capability. The accepted behavioral specification supports modularity and hierarchy. The developed design tools allow translating this specification into dynamically modifiable control circuits. A method based on reconfigurable cores for rapid design of reconfigurable virtual datapath was suggested. A stand-alone board using one XC6216 FPGA was designed and two other solutions, currently under development, were discussed. They can be used as virtual embedded controllers. An...

19. Modeling and programming with roles: introducing JavaStage - Barbosa, Fernando Sérgio; Aguiar, Ademar
Roles are not a new concept, but they have been used in two different ways: as modeling concepts in a static view and as instance extensions in a dynamic view. For these views only the dynamic offers supporting languages. The static view, although proving the utility of roles in modeling, does not offer a programming language that allows developers to use roles all the way from modeling to programming. We try to overcome this by presenting our role language JavaStage, based on the Java language. We do this by designing and implementing a simple framework and then compare the results...

20. Modeling crosscutting concerns with roles - Barbosa, Fernando Sérgio; Aguiar, Ademar
Modularization allows the development of independent modules and their reuse. However a single decomposition strategy cannot neatly capture all the systems concerns. Thus some concerns are spread over several modules – the crosscutting concerns. To cope with this we need to have other class composition techniques than those available in traditional Object Oriented programming languages. One of such compositions is roles. If roles are used to compose classes and if a role models a crosscutting concern, then the concern is limited to the role and not spread over several classes. To validate this approach we conducted a case study. In...
