  1. Tiny programming language to improve assembly generation for automation equipment

Metrôlho, J.C.M.M.; Costa, Mónica; Ribeiro, F. Reinaldo
The development time in industrial informatics systems, within industry environments, is a very important issue for competitiveness. The usage of adequate targetspecific programming languages is very important because they can facilitate and improve developers’ productivity, allowing solutions to be expressed in the idiom and at the level of abstraction of the problem’s domain. In this paper we present a target-specific programming language, which was designed to improve the design cycle of code generation, for an industrial embedded system. The native assembly code, the new language structure and their constructs, are presented in the paper. The proposed targetspecific language is expressed using words and terms that are related to the...

  2. Smart content selection for public displays in ambient intelligence environments

    Ribeiro, F. Reinaldo; José, Rui
A public display that is able to present the right information at the right time is a very compelling concept. However, realising or even approaching this ability to autonomously select appropriate content based on some interpretation of the surrounding social context represents a major challenge. This article provides an overview of the key challenges involved and an exploration of some of the main alternatives available. It also describes a novel place-based content adaptation system that autonomously selects from web sources the content deemed more relevant according to a dynamic place model. This model is based on a tag cloud that...

  3. A survey on IP-based wireless sensor networks solutions

    Rodrigues, Joel; Neves, P.A.C.S.
Wireless sensor networks can be composed of thousands of smart sensing nodes that capture environment data in a cost-efficient way. Such networks present new challenges when compared to traditional computer networks, namely in terms of smart node processing power and very limited energy resources. Ubiquitous computing can benefit from wireless sensor networks, from the perspective that sensed data can be used on behalf of the user without explicit intervention, turning ubiquitous computing into a reality. For the data to be available everywhere wireless sensor networks must be connected to the Internet. Two main approaches can be considered: proxy-based or sensor...

  5. Body sensor network mobile solutions for biofeedback monitoring

Pereira, Orlando; Caldeira, J.M.L.P.; Rodrigues, Joel
Body sensor networks (BSN) appeared as an application of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to medicine and biofeedback. Such networks feature smart sensors (biosensors) that capture bio-physiological parameters from people and can offer an easy way for data collection. BSNs also need suitable interfaces for data processing, presentation, and storage for latter retrieval. As a result, Bluetooth technology can be used to communicate with several more powerful and graphical user interface (GUI)-enabled devices such as mobile phones or regular computers. Taking into account that people currently use mobile and smart phones, it offers a good opportunity to propose a suitable mobile system for BSN networks. This paper presents a BSN mobile solution for biofeedback...

  6. Core-body temperature acquisition tools for long-term monitoring and analysis

Caldeira, J.M.L.P.; Moutinho, José A. F.; Rodrigues, Joel J. P. C.; Gilg, Marc; Lorenz, Pascal
The detection of fertile and ovulation periods may be performed by women’s body temperature variations. These variations are more accurate if a core-body temperature for their detection is used. Previous medical studies concluded that the use of skin temperature could be influenced by environmental conditions. Since the increasing of the body temperature in this period is only about 0.5 ºC, it is crucial that measurements should be the most accurate as possible. Due to the lack of solutions to realize that in order to measure and analyze the core-body temperature, this paper presents a system to capture, display, and monitoring...

  8. Impact of vehicle movement models on VDTN routing strategies for rural connectivity

    Soares, Vasco N. G. J.; Farahmand, Farid; Rodrigues, Joel J. P. C.
Vehicular delay-tolerant networks (VDTNs) appear as an alternative to provide low cost asynchronous internet access on developing countries or isolated regions, enabling non-real time services, such as e-mail, web access, telemedicine, environmental monitoring and other data collection applications. VDTNs are based on the delay-tolerant network (DTN) concept applied to vehicular networks, where vehicles mobility is used for connectivity. This paper considers a rural connectivity scenario and investigates how different mobility patterns and vehicle densities influence the performance of DTN routing protocols applied to VDTN networks. Moreover, routing protocols parameters are also changed in the present study. We analyse their effect on...

  9. Artificial neural networks and neuro-fuzzy systems for modelling and controlling real systems: a comparative study

Vieira, José; Dias, Fernando; Mota, Alexandre
This article presents a comparison of artificial neural networks andneuro-fuzzy systems appliedfor modelling andcontrolling a real system. The main objective is to model and control the temperature inside of a kiln for the ceramic industry. The details of all system components are described. The steps taken to arrive at the direct and inverse models using the two architectures: adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system and feedforward neural networks are described and compared. Finally, real-time control results using internal model control strategy are resented. Using available Matlab software for both algorithms, the objective is to show the implementation steps for modelling and controlling a real system....

  10. Groundwater contamination potential - vulnerability assessment

    Antunes, I.M.H.R.; Albuquerque, M.T.D.; Oliveira, S.F.
Águeda watershed is a sub-catchement of the Douro river (northern Portugal) and it is distributed on both Spanish and Portuguese territories. The main core of this work is the achievement of a methodological tool able to be used for vulnerability assessment in ttransboudary watersheds. Groundwaters’ vulnerability mapping was carried out by two different methodological approches: DRASTIC and DRASTIC Pesticide [1]. DRASTIC is a numerical index derived from ratings and weights assigned to seven parameters – Deep to water, net Recharge, Aquifer media, Soil media, Topography, Impact of the vadose zone and hidraulic Conductivity. The obtained values raises between 23 (not vulnerable) to 230 (highly vulnerable). Drastic Pesticide uses...

  11. Pedagogical changes towards the implementation of the Bologna Process: indicators’ structure of measurement

Ramos, A.; Afonso, Paulo; Cruchinho, A.; Delgado, F.M.G.; Ramos, George; Sapeta, Paula
The transition into the twenty-first century brought about important changes in society, including the areas of education and teaching. The establishment of the European Higher Education Area represents an effort to face these changes together in Europe. The changes in the teaching and learning models in higher education led to the institutional promotion of extensive interventions in order to alter the status quo that has prevailed for decades. The need for a cultural renewal of the teaching staff involved in higher education, attending to the centrality of student’s learning rather than knowledge per se, is also a challenge to be...

  13. Construction of a quality index for granules produced by fluidized bed technology and application of the correspondence analysis as a discriminant procedure

    Albuquerque, M.T.D.; Dias, H.V.; Poellinger, N.; Pinto F., J.
The production of granules by wet granulation in a fluidized bed was assessed after the construction of a quality index based on a file of attributes (relevant factors). These attributes are combined by a methodology relying on Correspondence Analysis, as a discriminant procedure, using two extreme simulated active vectors representing, respectively, the best and the worst cases for the granules quality output (“bad” and “good” pole). From those, a single continuous synthetic variable – the quality index – can be produced referring to a more significant set of samples. As an application of the methodology, the work compares the quality...

  15. A novel intra-body sensor for vaginal temperature monitoring

    Rodrigues, Joel J. P. C.; Caldeira, J.M.L.P.; Vaidya, Binod
Over the years some medical studies have tried to better understand the internal behavior of human beings. Many researchers in this domain have been striving to find relationships between intra-vaginal temperature and certain female health conditions, such as ovulation and fertile period since woman’s intra-vaginal temperature is one of the body parameters most preferred in such studies. However, due to lack of a appropriate technology, medical research devoted to studying correlations of such body parameters with certain womans’ body phenomena could not obtain better results. This article presents the design and implementation of a novel intra-body sensor for acquisition and monitoring of intra-vaginal temperatures. This novel intra-body sensor...

  16. Generic POLCA : a production and materials flow control mechanism for quick response manufacturing

Fernandes, N.O.G.; Silva, Sílvio do Carmo
A production and materials flow control mechanism for quick response manufacturing (QRM) is proposed. This is called generic paired-cell overlapping loops of cards with authorization (GPOLCA). It is an adaptation of the POLCA mechanism developed as part of the QRM strategy. GPOLCA implements an input–output control order release strategy based on an inventory of production authorization cards instead of materials. It is best suited for companies that manufacture large variety of products with variable demand. A description of GPOLCA is made together with a comparative study of its performance in relation with other mechanisms namely MRP and POLCA. The results show that GPOLCA attains better performance.

  17. Enhanced optical gain clamping for upstream packet based traffic on hybrid WDM/TDM-PON using fiber bragg grating

    Neto, B.; Klingler, A.; Reis, C.; Dionísio, Rogério; Nogueira, R. N.; Teixeira, A. L. J.; André, P. S.
In this paper, we propose a method to mitigate the temporal power transients arising from Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) on packeted/bursty scenario. The technique, applicable on hybrid WDM/TDM-PON for extended reach, is based on a low power clamping provided by a distributed feedback (DFB) laser and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). An mprovement in the data signal Q factor was achieved keeping the clamping control signal with a low power, accompanied by a maximum reduction in the gain excursion of 1.12 dB

  18. On the use of infrared thermography in studies with air curtain devices

Neto, Luís P. C.; Silva, Manuel Gameiro da; Costa, José J.
Among the different existing methods to characterise the aerodynamic sealing effect provided by an air curtain device placed over the opening between two contiguous compartments, infrared thermography has revealed to be a very useful tool. Besides allowing the capture, in an expedite way, of instantaneous images of the temperature field in the neighbourhood of the door, the technique hereon described has other advantages, in terms of quick and easy setup, low intrusive character and liability of obtained results. To apply this method, a large sheet of paper was stretched in the direction perpendicular to the opening where the air curtain device...

  19. Performance analysis of scheduling and dropping policies in vehicular delay-tolerant networks

    Soares, Vasco N. G. J.; Farahmand, Farid; Rodrigues, Joel J. P. C.
Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networking (VDTN) was proposed as a new variant of a delay/disruptive-tolerant network, designed for vehicular networks. These networks are subject to several limitations including short contact durations, connectivity disruptions, network partitions, intermittent connectivity, and long delays. To address these connectivity issues, an asynchronous, store-carry-and-forward paradigm is combined with opportunistic bundle replication, to achieve multi-hop data delivery. Since VDTN networks are resource-constrained, for example in terms of communication bandwidth and storage capacity, a key challenge is to provide scheduling and dropping policies that can improve the overall performance of the network. This paper investigates the efficiency and tradeoffs of...

  20. Traffic differentiation support in vehicular delay-tolerant networks

    Soares, Vasco N. G. J.; Farahmand, Farid; Rodrigues, Joel J. P. C.
Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networking (VDTN) is a Delay-Tolerant Network (DTN) based architecture concept for transit networks, where vehicles movement and their bundle relaying service is opportunistically exploited to enable non-real time applications, under environments prone to connectivity disruptions, network partitions and potentially long delays. In VDTNs, network resources may be limited, for instance due to physical constraints of the network nodes. In order to be able to prioritize applications traffic according to its requirements in such constrained scenarios, traffic differentiation mechanisms must be introduced at the VDTN architecture. This work considers a priority classes of service (CoS) model and investigates how...
