1. Market Expansion and Elasticity Improvement as complementary Marketing Activities - Amir, Rabah; Mantovani, Andrea
Consider a marketing division of a monopoly firm that faces two marketing options: Market enlargement and elasticity improvement. These options are conceived in terms of the target of the firm’s advertising campaigns: Potential new consumers versus existing consumers. Using a CES demand function in a simple model, we demonstrate that the two activities are complementary, so that for some cost configurations, the firm will find it profitable to implement the two options together when either option alone would result in a loss. This calls for the marketing division to be integrated, rather than decentralized.

2. Delegation and Cartel Stability - Lambertini, Luca
The effect of delegation on cartel stability is addressed in a duopoly for a homogeneous product, under Cournot competition. The main findings are that if only one firm is managerial, the critical discount factor is increased by the presence of a weight attached to sales, so that cartel stability is decreased, while if both are managerial the opposite holds. As a consequence, the inclusion of sales in both firms’ objective function represents an incentive towards collusion.

3. A PSYCHOGENETIC ALGORITHM FOR BEHAVIORAL SEQUENCE LEARNING - Maniezzo, Vittorio; Roffilli, Matteo
This work presents an original algorithmic model of some essential features of psychogenetic theory, as was proposed by J.Piaget. Specifically, we modeled some elements of cognitive structure learning in children from 0 to 4 months of life. We are in fact convinced that the study of well-established cognitive models of human learning can suggest new, interesting approaches to problem so far not satisfactorily solved in the field of machine learning. Further, we discussed the possible parallels between our model and subsymbolic machine learning and neuroscience. The model was implemented and tested in some simple experimental settings, with reference to the...

4. Discovering clines of variation: the location and analysis of non-canonical forms in general reference corpora - Philip, Gill
As phraseology moves ever more into the mainstream of corpus linguistics research, it is no longer acceptable to limit the language studied to canonical, dictionary citation forms. But how can others be retrieved, when precise forms they take are not known? This paper sets out some general principles for retrieving non-canonical examples, using collocational frameworks, and expands upon the utility of analysing the innovative alongside the ordinary.

5. Metaphor, the dictionary, and the advanced learner - Philip, Gill
Research into figurative language in foreign language acquisition has primarily focused on the receptive skills, where there is strong evidence to suggest that encouraging students to reflect on the metaphorical origins of figurative expressions makes learning and recall of vocabulary demonstrably more effective. However, very little has been said about the effects of this strategy on students’ productive output. With some advanced learners’ dictionaries now also including information about conceptual metaphor, it is important that the utility of this feature be examined in more detail. This paper examines different types of figurative language produced by advanced learners of English at...

6. Studiare, documentarsi, incontrarsi.

7. Arriving at equivalence: Making a case for comparable corpora in Translation Studies - Philip, Gill
When multilingual corpora are used in translation studies, it is usually assumed that they are either parallel or comparable, or both; and that their size and text composition are analogous. As general reference corpora become more widely available, it is inevitable that these too should be used to compare and contrast SL norms, thus extending the definition of comparability to include text collections whose size and content may vary considerably, and which are nevertheless considered representative of their languages. This paper addresses the contribution of comparable reference corpora to the identification of translation equivalence. Focusing in particular on native-speaker norms,...

8. Il Progetto Alm@ DL dell’Università di Bologna: aspetti tecnici e sociali - Comba, Valentina
Il progetto Alma DL colloca l'Università di Bologna tra le prime istituzioni italiane che stanno realizzando servizi di editoria digitale e di digitalizzazione in Italia. L'intervento illustra le varie fasi del progetto, le principali criticità sia sul piano tecnico che sociale e le prospettive di sviluppo immediate.

9. Schauder estimates, Harnack inequality and Gaussian lower bound for Kolmogorov type operators in non-divergence form - Di Francesco, Marco; Polidoro, Sergio
We prove some Schauder type estimates and an invariant Harnack inequality for a class of degenerate evolution operators of Kolmogorov type. We also prove a Gaussian lower bound for the fundamental solution of the operator and a uniqueness result for the Cauchy problem. The proof of the lower bound is obtained by solving a suitable optimal control problem and using the invariant Harnack inequality.

10. Reassessing the Canon: “fixed” phrases in general reference corpora - Philip, Gill
This paper sets forth the argument for revisiting fixed phrases in the light of the knowledge that their fixedness is not necessarily something to be taken for granted. It focuses on the location and analysis of variant forms in general reference corpora. Existing phraseological structures, including collocational frameworks, idiom schemas and semi-prepackaged phrases, are introduced by way of background before a procedure for retrieving non-canonical forms of fixed expressions in general reference corpora is presented. Some implications relating to the study of variant forms are presented, along with suggestions for future research directions.

12. Very Strongly Constrained Problems: An Ant Colony Optimization Approach - Maniezzo, V.; Roffilli, M.
Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a class of metaheuristic algorithms sharing the common approach of constructing a solution on the basis of information provided both by a standard constructive heuristic and by previously constructed solutions. This paper is composed of three parts. The first one frames ACO in current trends of research on metaheuristics for combinatorial optimization. The second outlines current research within the ACO community, reporting recent results obtained on different problems, while the third part focuses on a particular research line, named ANTS, providing some details on the algorithm and presenting results recently obtained on a prototypical strongly...

13. The University of Bologna career guidance project: bridging secondary schools and university with the e-learning experience - Cenni, Sara; Comba, Valentina; Luppi, Vera; Quatrosi, Francesca; Reggiani, Andrea
The University of Bologna has started the Career Guidance Project developing several initiatives: self evaluation questionnaires for Secondary Schools students, training courses for admission tests, and an e-learning platform with online modules in order to explain and show the cultural and professional environment of the University. It will be explained the genesis of the Project, the choice of the Learning Management System, the authoring tool advantages and the practical modules implementation. Special attention will be devoted to the analysis of the relationship with Professors and Authors during the modules preparation: the course deployment has been an opportunity not only to explain which...

14. “Non una donna in politica, ma una donna politica”: Women’s Political Language in an Italian Context - Philip, Gill
This study examines the metaphors used by women politicians in Italy. Similarities and differences between the metaphors which occur are analysed, using a corpus of political communiqués, speeches and interviews spanning the period June 2006 - May 2007.

17. Adverb use in EFL student writing - Philip, Gill
Adverbs, especially those occurring in adverb+adjective collocations, play a central role in the language that advanced learners are expected to produce in their argumentative writing. However submodifying adverbs of degree such as ‘closely’, ‘deeply’, ‘strongly’ and ‘widely’ have been identified as being problematic for learners of English: Italian learners over-use very and really to the virtual exclusion of any other adverb (Philip 2007). This situation is due in part to the EFL curriculum, but monolingual and bilingual learner’s dictionaries appear to do little to address the issue. This contribution examines the treatment of lexical adverbs of degree in the five...

18. Arriving at equivalence. Making a case for comparable general reference corpora in Translation Studies. - Philip, Gill
When multilingual corpora are used in translation studies, it is usually assumed that they are either translated (parallel) or comparable, or both; and that their size and text composition are analogous. As general reference corpora become more widely available, it is inevitable that these too should be used to compare and contrast SL norms, thus extending the definition of comparability to include text collections whose size and content may vary considerably, and which are nevertheless considered representative of their languages. 19. Improved scalar intensity measures in performance-based earthquake engineering - Bianchini, Marcello
An earthquake intensity measure (IM) is a characteristic of a recorded ground motion that quanti…es the severity of a seismic event. In reliability analysis of structural systems subjected to ground shaking, the choice of IM plays a leading role. In probabilistic engineering assessment, the IM is used both as a scale factor for recorded ground motions in incremental dynamic analysis and as that parameter which de…nes the seismic hazard at a speci…ed site. In this paper, the geometric mean of pseudo-spectral acceleration ordinates over a certain range of periods, Sa,avg, is used as a scalar IM to predict inelastic structural...

20. Rivalry and Learning Among Clustered and Isolated Firms - Boari, Cristina; Fioretti, Guido; Odorici, Vincenza
In this contribution, we wish to explore the relationships between rivalry and geographical proximity at the very level of contacts between individual firms. In particular, we wish to highlight the influence of geographical proximity on rival identification, on the comparison of their knowledge, and on the consequent elaboration of a strategy. In order to reproduce the interactions between firms, we made use of an agent-based model (ABM) where the strategic choices of rival firms are derived from general assumptions on competitive behavior and learning processes. Aim of the model is to investigate the co-evolution of firms’ knowledge, strategies and performances.
