Geographical concentration and scarce census of the Retuertas horse force to design a complete conservation plan. One of the used tools as a mean of ex situ conservation was the creation of a germplasm bank. Previously, a study of the se-minal quality and its aptitude for freezing was developed. Results were: volume 23,25±12,72 ml; concentration 335,83±135,60x106 spermatozoa/ml; basal motility 3,83±0,98 (1-5) and progressive motility 60,42±15,42 (0-100%); all of them shown significant differences among stallions.

The wild boar, a cinegetic species of Iberian Peninsula, has numerous sub-populations of Sus scrofa mediterraneus. Doñana National Park is the most important biological reserves in Spain and the largest protected area with great ecological diversity, distributed on three basic types of ecosystems: sand dunes, beaches and marshes. Here live together a variety of species: mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes... and, among them, the wild boar. In order to determine the genetic diversity, also in comparison with other Spanish populations, we studied 25 microsatellite pigs markers and found genetic variation within and among populations by analysis of heterozygosity (0.53), number of...

Goats are located predominantly in the dry Spain specially in Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, the Canary Islands, Murcia and Extremadura. In this paper we have analyzed 867 samples of 18 Spanish goat populations from different parts of the Iberian Peninsula (Azpi-Gorri, Blanca de Rasquera, Blanca Andaluza, Blanca Celtibérica, Florida, Malagueña, Murciano-Granadina, Negra Serrana, Payoya and Retinta) and the Balearic (Ibicenca, Mallorquina and Formentera goat) and Canarian Archipelagos (Ajuí, Majorera, Palmera, Tenerife North and Tenerife South). Twenty-three microsatellites have been amplified and the within-breed genetic variation has been calculated through the analysis of the mean number of alleles, heterozygosity and FIS The...

The breeding program of the Spanish-Arabian horse is in process of development and, for this reason, is necessary to know its population structure from the information registered in the Herd Book to design strategy for its improvement and utilization. The demographic parameters were calculated having a census of 1041 animals, taking part of the selective nucleus; the effective population size was 1036.94 (553 females and 488 males) with a sex ratio of 1.13. With a correct reproductive management we expect an increasing of the inbreeding rate by generation of 0.000482 (0.048%) and by year of 0.000055 (0.005%), something expected because...

Marismeña cattle breed is a feral population included in a pre-zootechnic agro-ecosystem, the Doñana protected area. In spite of these characteristics so exclusives, the absence of characterization of their products difficults the finding of a way of commercialization differentiated of the typical commerce, adding value to product by way of a differentiated quality. The preliminary results of a meat physic-chemical study are presented. Seventeen animals of the breed have been studied reared in two different systems of fattening: its natural context and a commercial fattening station. Meat shown significant differences between the management systems for the results of the chemical...

Andalusian Black cattle breed is in danger of extinction alter to go out of the border of the disappearance. Moreover, the present situation of the Spanish farming, its belonging to the Iberian Black branch, producing a high pressure from other related breeds with a better productive potentiality. Studies for the breed conservation have begun, among them, the morphological study. By the moment 3 different farms without known influences from other breeds and 24 adult females have been recorded for 14 quantitative morphological traits, and some qualitative such as front profile and coat colour. Studied individuals presented few morphological variation and...

In the present work, a Guabala Creole cattle was characterized by a twenty-seven microsatellite panel, selected from a recommendation of FAO/ISAG. Samples of DNA were obtained from the Guabala Creole cattle population in the occidental region of the Republic of Panama and the Anton Valley, places where we found pure animals of this population. From each microsatellite, the polymorphic information content (PIC), mean number of alleles (Na), observed heterozygosity (Ho), expected heterozygosity (He), Fis statistic and the exact test for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) were calculated. The results found were: PIC: 0.6044; Na: 5.63; He: 0.6458; Ho: 0.6265; Fis: 0.0504. Nine...

In this study the lineal and temporal parameters of the stride of andalusian (n=10), angloarabian (n=6) and arabian (n=7) mature horses were compared at the walk. The speeds were similar in the three breeds (1.63±0.10 m/s), for what the Archivos de zootecnia vol. 48, núm. 183, p. 328. GALISTEO ET AL. statistical comparisons were carried out by an analysis of the variance, and a means comparison test (Tukey test). The stride lenght was shorter in arabians and andalusians than in angloarabians, while the overtracking lenght was bigger in the arabians. The duration of the forelimb cycle was bigger in angloarabians...

On study the effect of different serum and hormonal supplements, when added to the maturation medium, on the in vitro maturation and subsequent fertilization and cleavage process of bovine oocytes. The oocyte maturation, fertilization and cleavage rates in the presence of ECS, FCS and hormonal supplements were significantly higher (p<0.001) than that obtained in the control group. No significant differences for maturation, fertilization and development were observed between the different supplements. The addition of serum and hormonal supplements to the maturation medium improved the in vitro maturation rates and subsequent in vitro fertilization and cleavage rates of bovine oocytes.

Matured bovine oocytes and zygotes obtained by in vitro maturation and fertilization techniques (IVM and IVF) were cytogenetically prepared by using an improved method for chromosome preparations. The method, which involves use of trypsinizedhypotonic solution plus a vortex-agitated system and very cold two-step fixation process, contributes to weaken the zona pellucida and allows the swelling of oocytes and zygotes which helps the subsequent spreading of the chromosomes. This method permits to obtain preparations of good quality for examining the number and morphology of the chromosomes of oocytes and zygotes for any meiotic and mitotic stage.

The Cattle census of the Canary Islands is about 20500 animals, of this the Canary Creole Cattle Breed is only the 15.8 p.100. The other part of the census is formed by another selected breeds for milk production. Until the beginning of this decade this authochtonous breed became into danger of extinction because the competence of these imported breeds. In many cases the local population were absorbed and the total number decreased. At present, with the participation of an specific farmer association (Asociación Canaria de Arrastre) and the Official Institutions, the census are stabilised and is possible to see the...

We are presenting a morphological study of the black varieties of the Iberian pig breed considering the Lampiño, Entrepelado, Mamellado, Silvela and Mamellado x Silvela strains, according to the Association of Breeders (AECERIBER) criteria. From the quantitative variables study, few significative differences among strains and sexes has been found, with absence of interactions between both factors. Also a posteriori homogeneity among means has been found significative association between strains and the frequencies of the coat colour, the types of hair, the hear type and the complementary particularities in the females, while in males a total independence have been shown.

When the Spaniards begun the conquest of the Canary Islands at the XVth Century, they found a hair sheep exploited in semi-domestic conditions, as it was written by the cronists in the seven islands. A few later, after the discovery of America, a hair sheep appeared in the Caribe. The researchers locate its origin directly in the present hair sheep of the Sub-Saharian Africa. In this paper we present some hypothesis firstly justifying the presence of hair sheep in the Canary Island, located in a latitude of wool sheep in those times. Secondly, we try to justify the sure relationship...

Here we present a study about the present conservation status of all the varieties of the Andalusian Hound dog breed attending to the vulnerability criteria stabilised for the livestock species. We concluded the existence of six rare varieties in the breed; a group of three varieties (big size-short hair, small size-hard hair and small size-long hair) in a critical situation; and other three varieties (big size-long hair, midsizelong hair and small size- short hair) in vulnerability. The remaining varieties are stable or they genetic improvement is possible. Finally we propose a preservation plan of the endangered varieties attending to zootechnic,...
