  1. Writing for Money, or The Distresses of a Hired Writer

    Portela, Manuel
In the following pages I look at literary representations of the literary market in the eighteenth century, focusing on conflicting ideas about writing for money. In many works relations between monetary interest, political dependence and artistic form enact the dilemmas of a commercialised society in the specific domain of literature. With the growth of the print market and the definition of literary property, the image of the professional author was opposed both to the commercial author and to the gentleman author. The economic independence that came with the privatisation of the imagination and with the commodification of writing was seen...

  2. A Portrait of the Author as an Author

    Portela, Manuel
The growth of the literary market in the eighteenth century changed concepts of authorship. Portrait conventions were also used to frame authorial personality. By looking at pictorial representations of men and women authors, in paintings and prints, I identify conflicting images of authorship. Idealised representations of the author as gentleman or lady are contrasted with images of the violence of market forces. Polite restraint of the self-conscious individual genius has to face the unruly passions and interests that characterise the new social relations of literary production.

  3. Hipertexto como Metalivro

    Portela, Manuel

  4. The Codex and the Computer as Self-Reflexive Machines

    Portela, Manuel José Freitas
This lecture looks at self-reflexive mechanisms in codices and computers. It contains a brief introduction to the use of books and computers as expressive media in literature. I want to explore the hypothesis that self-reflexivity in artists’ books and in digital poems is useful for understanding the literary dynamics of writing and reading. Self-referential enactments of reading will be shown in works by Johanna Drucker and Jason Nelson. In the selected works, bookness and digitality are foregrounded by a performance of reading that has been formally scripted, in page layout and in computer code. As they travel the sign field of the work, readers experience how...

  6. Atlantic Entanglements: Narratives of Self and Other at the Turn of the 20th Century

    Tavares, Teresa
Although the mobility of populations across the Atlantic has a long history, the decades around the turn of the 20th century witnessed an unprecedented movement of migrants from Europe to the Americas. This increased movement of peoples coincided with the overseas expansion of the United States, in the wake of the Spanish-American War (1898), which led to the acquisition of territories in Central America and the Pacific region. This period, then, is a turning point in the history of US relations with the world, marking the emergence of a new global system in which the US would come to play an increasingly important role. These are some...

  7. Home Sour Home: Uncanny Experiences of the U.S. Home Front in the 1940s

    Canelo, Maria José
This paper examines the impact of World War II in the home front as represented in short‐stories published in the U.S. wartime journal Common Ground. Published between 1940 and 1949, the magazine combined literature and social and cultural critique in its progressive analysis of matters of race, immigration, citizenship, and civil rights. Although Common Ground’s intellectual community committed itself to protect unity at the home front, it published complex representations of the theme of homecoming in particular, conveying instances of latent violence at the national level that challenged the sense of ‘homeliness.’ The analysis attempts a combination of theories of...
